Hi everyone. I just joined. I have a small flock: 6 hens and one mean rooster. I would have gotten rid of the rooster but I need him to scare of predators or to alert the dogs. I have a small Fort Knox with a small covered run. I can’t have them run around the property because of the bears, foxes, coyotes, hawks… you name it, I have it. Anyways, I love my chickens, not the rooster, and I love spending time with them when I can isolate the rooster.

How old is your rooster? Sometimes it takes over a year for their hormones to settle down. Otherwise, maybe he's soup and get a different one?

Welcome to the BYC! Glad you have decided to join our online family. Roosters are sometimes a handful to manage, but once they've established their pecking order, and/or grown out of their hormones, they are awesome to have around. I currently have 11 roosters in our flocks...some are mean as he77, and others are such gentlemen, but all are welcome in our family.
