Hi! I'm from CT and am trying to do all my homework on raising chickens before I get started. This seems like an informative and friendly site so I couldn't help but join.

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I don't have any chickens yet. I am doing my research about care, space, varieties etc before jumping in. My chickens would be only for egg production (and fun!) and I don't have a huge piece of land so I will be starting out with only 3 chickens.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?

(3) What breeds do you have?
After comparing all the breeds, I am leaning towards Plymouth Rock or Red Star due to the climate where I live, egg production and temperament. If anyone would like to weigh in on my choices I would appreciate it

(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?
I found the link on google, started reading and was hooked.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I am a singer and do some acting in community theater. I love camping, fishing and kayaking, am an avid gardener and bird watcher and love to read.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
Married for 19 years to a wonderful man who is a police officer and musician. We have a 16 yr old son who is into film making.
I'm a retired bar owner and now do freelance set design for theater and TV. I also have a small studio "Light of Day" where I make wind chimes and suncatchers from sea glass (we live about a mile from the beach).
We have a great, 8 month old puppy named "Jake". He's and Australian Cattle Dog mix that we rescued from the shelter. He's lots of fun and I hope to be competing in obedience trails with him soon.
We also have a 7 year old cat "PT Jones" (or "Curly Jefferson", as some of the neighbors like to call him) who is quite a character.

from central AR. It is a great site for info and so many people willing to help a newbie. You can use the search box to pull up topics that have been discussed in the past, so if you don't see a topic you have a question about, try that first. Read all you can about coops, runs, predators, feeding, etc. before you get your chicks. Good luck!
