I just wanted to take a second and introduce myself.
I am a married 40somthing father of two, living north of the great city of Charlotte NC.

We live in a small neighborhood w/ livestock and farming restrictions, but that has never stopped anyone.

I grew up on a small 375 acre farm in western Illinois and miss the daily farming life. I am certain by most standards I am "soft" would never be able to keep up w/ myself of 20yrs ago!!!

We are not moving back to the "country" anytime soon, and really just want to embrace some simpler lifestyle benefits.

Gardening has become a big part of our life - we raise and eat a bounty of items and manage to stager plantings to maximize our harvests.

I think our next move is going to be to add 2-3 small hen chickens to our backyard. For those that caution me because of the neighborhood restrictions, I have found a loophole that allows outdoor domestic pet animals. There are a ton of accompanying documents that call out certain chickens as "pets".

I am going to be reading a ton of the post and might even be asking for advice.

THANKS FOR ALL THE CONTRIBUTE - I LOOK FORWARD TO EVERYONE'S INPUT.

Welcome! I also live in town, but we are fortunate that it's a very small Wyoming town. Here folks have donkeys, chickens (and roosters), horses, sheep and cattle on their properties. Many communities are now lifting their bans on chickens - a sign of the economic times or a reaction to the TV show "Preppers"? I don't know, but it's nice that they are recognizing the value of a few chickens for eggs and meat.

Good luck with your new adventure and if you have any questions, that is what we are here for!!

Hi and :welcome

Good luck with your chickens! It's nice to be able to eat things straight from the garden (especially the eggs!)
Neat that you managed to find a loophole. I live in the middle of the city but I don't think we have restrictions here. Our neighbours had nine chickens at one time, including one rooster. I've seen chickens in a lot of gardens while walking round the neighbourhood. It's indeed good that this idea is spreading!

Enjoy the site :D
