I'm Stef; my husband Joe & I live in Central Texas. We had a small flock of chickens for a couple of years (2016-2018), but predators got hold of them one by one until we were chickenless. Our flock was between three and five hens at a time, and we also tried our hand at hatching our own. The one time we did this, though, we got five roosters and zero hens out of it! They ended up either chasing each other off, or maiming each other. Our final remaining rooster lasted quite awhile, but was killed defending his hens (probably from a hawk or coyote). We want to have a flock again, but this time want to ensure we properly protect them, while still giving them some freedom to free range (they SO love it!).

I love getting the eggs, needless to say, but also love watching the chickens scratch about the place; it's so calming. They provide friendship and company to us. We have three grown kids & a 10-year-old grandson. Living with us are two big dogs and one cat. We like watching movies, documentaries, reading, cooking, baking, gardening, and spending time with family and friends.

We found BYC through a link on DeannaCat's website, Homestead and Chill. When I read the "About Us" section and saw it's managed by one of the authors of Raising Chickens for Dummies (great book!), I knew it was a good place to be!

Welcome! It’s a very cool group to be a part of. Enjoy!

Hello there and welcome to BYC! :frow

Build a large run to keep them in. I have to supervise all free ranging due to an overload of predators that lurk, so I hang around outside and do chores and such while they are out. A minimum of 10 square foot per bird in the run, 5 square feet per bird in the coop.

Good luck and welcome to our community!

Thank you, Two Crows, we will! Looking for budget-friendly ways to get that done.
