Howdy Y'all

G’Day from down under Keeperofflock :frow Welcome!

Thank you for a great introduction and congratulations on being a chicken parent again :clap

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

Including your general location on your profile will assist others. Location, climate, season etc can be important factors when members are responding to any questions you may have and vice versa.

BYC has Topic of the Week discussions which I have found to be a great resource, informative and sometimes entertaining; so definitely worth checking out.

If you would like to share Pictures and Stories of your flock, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out ;)

Greetings! We are a 62 and 60 year old married couple of 45 years this year. Hubby is an Appalachian transplant and I'm a native stay-at-home Hoosier. We had an urban chicken "gathering" about 15 years ago but due to health at the time just couldn't keep them. :hmm We have a 1/2 acre homestead where we grow 2 gardens and another smaller one in an elderly neighbors yard in exchange for fresh veggies. I do a lot of canning, dehydrating and freezing. I guess you could say we are somewhat of preppers. Basically we prepare for hard times as hubbies job slows down in the winter.

Son moved to the country just recently and is starting his chicken "gathering". I have officially been bitten once again. SO, we have a new "gathering" of 3 Rhode island Reds, 3 Leghorns, and 3 Ameraucana. I, of course, am the Keeperoflock and I'm looking forward to getting back into the chicken swing of things and the fresh eggs. :clap So are my neighbors. One of our neighbors got upset with us when we had to get rid of our earlier flock (he loved hearing the rooster crow) so he is going to be pleased once again.

Nice to meet y'all! :highfive:

glad to have your join we also have a old folks thread Welcome to Backyard Chickens

Welcome Keeperoflock, I am a transplanted Hoosier myself. Been living in FL for about 40 years but still a Hoosier at heart. What part of the state are you in. I came from a small town SE of Indy called Connersville.

Hi and thanks for the welcome! I'm in central Indiana but have lived in Coatsville and Bainbridge.

Welcome! Be sure to visit your state thread, and the many gardening threads. There are also some DIY threads, and some "cooking" threads. The learning center is also loaded with good information. I'm coming up on 62 myself! I have a neighbor who enjoys the crow of the rooster as well. Neighbor will often stand at the end of his driveway and crow at my rooster! I started pressure canning 2 seasons ago, am getting my feet wet with dehydration. Bought a new freezer in November, so looking forward to an other growing season!

Hi Lazy Gardener! Really excited to be here. I'll be looking for the "cooking" thread. I'm always looking for new recipes. I got a good chuckle at the vision of your neighbor crowing at your rooster in his driveway.
I love to pressure can. Mom taught me when I was in 3rd grade. I want to get into canning meats, chicken, turkey, deer, burger, etc... Dehydrating is awesome! There's a lady on YouTube that has a huge number of videos on what she dehydrates. I've learned a lot from her. I currently have 2 Nescos and just recently bought a gas range (switched from electric to gas) that has a dehydrator function on it. Haven't used it yet but plan on it soon.

I am wanting to get into growing my own herbs and dehydrating them. Excited to start that!

We have 2 freezers. A meat freezer and one for other stuff. It's all so much fun!

I dehydrated some parsley last season. That stuff is incredible. I throw it into many of my dishes. I'd never grown the curly leafed parsley before, much preferring the giant flat leaf italian. But... this stuff just may have made a convert of me. It produced like crazy, and the gleanings from 2 plants yielded a qt. of dried parsley. One pt went in the freezer, and I kept one in the kitchen.

Herbs are so stupid easy to grow. But, I now need to be more proactive in drying them instead of just using them fresh.

BTW, don't be afraid to start them from seed. i've even had good luck with Rosemary, which is supposed to be a difficult start.
