One of my splash oegb pullets was found wheezing and not going too well. I brought her indoors and
she wheezed a few more times and we thought she was dying. I had never seen anything like this.
She laid a soft shell egg on the counter and appeared to recover and regained her appetite. Is this
"normal" in any way or is just a first egg problem?

She munching on cracked eggshells and layer pellets right now and appears normal again.

It seems fairly common for hens laying soft shelled eggs to act 'odd'. I had a hen that would huddle in a corner all puffed up, limp, and with her eyes closed, and I seriously thought she was going to die, but after laying a soft shelled egg she jumped right up and started to play with her pals.

I'd definitely keep a close eye on her, though. Did she have any nasal discharge or watery eyes along with the wheezing?

Her regaining her appetite is a very good sign!

Thank you Blue Myst. She did not have any nasal discharge or anything but,
was just wheezing so hard she looked like she was crowing and appeared to be dying.
Her crop was empty and didn't appear she ate anything all day. After passing the egg
she appeared normal and began picking through her pellets. I'm hoping that it is just
a "getting the plumbing worked out" incident.

I've got them indoors in a rabbit cage anyway while I sort of work on their little coop.
Keeping an eye on them is not difficult right now.

That's great, it doesn't sound like a respiratory problem. It could be she was just straining very hard to get her egg out.
