I was thinking the same thing after you told me what happened. Between the time, expense and effort to keep them safe from predators and all of their crazy ailments, they're a lot of work. Worth it but the frustration and heartbreak is tough. Chin up...!

Once again, I agree. It is worth it though, but anything can come along and knock you out just when you think everyhting is smooth-sailing, even if you've not had problem for a really long time (like my co-worker with the bear-break-in, 1st incident he had in 2 years).

Lexi, can you still get some more hatching eggs from your adult SLW birds and start over, or are they not old enough yet, or is it too late in the season to start incubating? I know nothing about hatching eggs.

On another bright note: my roof is finaly done, yay! This stretch of hot dry weather helped. That big hailstorm Monday missed us completely in Phoenicia, but I saw vids of how bad it was in Kingston, wow! Hope everyone here on the HV thread made out OK.

Back on the topic of chickens: I was talking on the phone to my sister in VT who has about 2 doz. buff orpingtons. I asked her how many nest boxes I should build in my 7x8 coop for about 12 hens. She suggested 6 (She has 12 for her flock). Wow, that seems like a lot! I was thinking 3 would be enough as I've read that many people's hens seem to like to share the same nest box anyhow. I'd rather save some open floor space in the coop and not use it up with so many nest boxes. Maybe 4?

I've also seen people use large community nest boxes here on BYC, so maybe just a big 4" long nest box with two openings in the front and a hinged lid? Would love to hear what you all have experienced.

Glad Monday's storm missed you. I heard we're getting a lot of rain tomorrow so your roof was finished just in time!
SO many theories on nesting boxes. We have 4 nesting boxes for 12 girls. It'll be interesting to see if they use all 4 or share 1 or 2 WHEN/IF THEY EVER LAY AN EGG !!!

I forgot yours are still young yet. I'll be really excited for you when they start laying, and also eager to see how many nests they use. Be sure to post pics of that first egg! I think you said you have EEs and Orpingtons, right?

I keep changing my mind on what breeds to get, based on what I read here on BYC. So hard to narrow it down. I like the dark eggs of Welsummer and Marans but it seems they may not be too productive. Seems like Australorps and Plymouth Rocks and EEs are very productive and have jumbo eggs, while purebred Ameraucanas maybe not so big eggs or productive. I have to read up more on the different Wyandottes, either way they are still on my list of favorites, so pretty, cold-hardy, and seem like good layers. Good thing I have a lot of time yet before I obtain chicks...
