Good Morning Hudson Valley! I've been away from this forum a long time and have a lot of reading to do. I've been busy between work and house-painting. 1 side completely done, 3 to go. Hopefully I'll be done before the snow flies.

Lisa, good luck with the shower and congratulations on your daughter's wedding! My nephew's wedding in Vermont a couple of weeks ago was one of the nicest I've ever been to, just beautiful weather, beautiful farm setting. Very simple, very enjoyable. Great to see all the family. No chickens at this farm, they concentrate on Jersey cows for raw milk, and vegetables. They cooperate with a neighboring farm for eggs though and have a nice farm store on site with a wood-fired bread oven that I am envious of.

Diane - I love the pics of the 2 hens you picked up in Woodstock. That's just down the road from me. I'm partial to Wyandottes, very pretty. Hope they are settling in well for you.

So I am trying to take a good look at the garden and we are adding in some mulched area in the back yard with a sitting area etc...and while I am there I want to add more perennials. I also am thinking of adding some peaches and apples. I have plums currently. Anyone have suggestions or advice? I was checking out the arborday website and love the black walnut trees too....I basically am wondering if I should try to shop for the perennials now and hopefully get some end of year deals? or wait til next year. I dont know...

buy now, anything left you should get good deals on. always pull the plant out of the pot and look at the roots--black and slimy-put it back- you still have enough time to plant into the ground and the plants can get a good root system going before winter. fertilize----if you want to mulch before winter---wait till the ground freezes and then mulch away---that way your plants don't go thru as much freeze and thaw cycles thru the beginning of winter and end of fall.--just a thought!!!

My great Uncle was a master gardener and I learned things from him. Times like this I miss him so much. I wanted to prune my plum tree at the end of the season only to find out it isn't the right time now. Live and learn the hard way

I am trying to get some solid green leaf hosta to add to my verigated border already. I have so much property that is shady.

Anyways back to chickens....yesterday one of my girls was missing and I was sad but blamed myself because they are free ranging all day and I had seen hawks last week. Either way she came home this morning. I was so excited because she was one of my favorites. Ethel is the sweetest girl I have and she follows me all over the yard/garden. Glad she came home. I wonder where she spent the night since I went out all night and morning looking for her.

I have seen my chickens 20 feet up in a tree. crazy things
