Hudson Valley NY *chat thread*

Wilklos orchard across from the highland High school makes apple jack..I dont think they sell it there, but they do make it there.

The fair was fun. We went Friday afternoon and left around 8:30; it started to get really crowded and my son was losing steam (ok I was also! lol). Besides the cruise in May, we didn't do much either. It seems Summer slipped away so quickly. We're squeezing in one more concert (Kid Rock and ZZ Top @ Bethel). I'd like to get to the Renaissance Fair at some point but I don't think that's going to happen. I have to start concentrate on getting The Boy ready for school. It'll be nice to get back into a routine. I'm looking forward to picking apples, canning, Halloween, etc! Have you been to the Great Jack O' Lantern Blaze? I wanna go but haven't heard good or bad about it. It looks pretty cool! Anyway....Re: Staten Island...I've only been there a couple of times and both times it was a nightmare to get to! And the Thruway is never, ever an easy route, especially on Sunday afternoons. How's the fox situation???

Ahhh I wanted to go to zz top!!!! Its sold out!!!! Your so lucky lol
Iv never heard of the jack o lantern blaze. Where is it?

Sounds like you had a fun visit with your sister! What wineries are near you? How was the wine? NY wines aren't my favorite..they always seem too young to drink although I've had a few good ones from Brotherhood and Robibero. The wineries along the Shawangunk Wine Trail are beautiful places to visit. My friend and I went on a cruise up the Pacific Coast last year. As one of our excursions we stopped at the Chateau St. Michelle/Columbia Crest winery in Washington ~ SO much fun. Good wine too! Anyway, molting doesn't look pleasant at all. I wonder if it hurts...? When are your eggs due to hatch? What breeds?
We went to a few on the shawangunk trail. My girlsfriends went to Robibero & Whitecliff a few weeks back so this trip we went to: Bernmarl (they had a beautiful wedding going on during our visit), Adair, Glorie Farm, and last Stoutridge. I liked our first and third stops best. I wouldn't go back to Adair or Stoutridge. We came home with around two cases of wine and had a wonderful outing. My husband was the only man and even he had a good time. He drove all the ladies in the mini van. At times we kept running into the same people and that part was kind of silly and fun. We just had a nice laid back day without the kids. Stopped for some cider donuts at a farm on 9w that I used to visit all the time. It was nice to do the tasting considering we had a very different group for 'taste'. I ended up loving a dessert black currant wine that I was convinced to try against my will. It reminded me of sitting in front of the fireplace on a winter night.
Speaking of NY wines: one of the major apple orchards in NP is comming out with an apple jack! We got to sample a bottle and it was so smooth. It tasted like a chardonnay. It was probably the best wine I had all summer.
I noticed an apple vodka being shown at glorie that was bottled from someplace else. Never did try it but I was interested. I would love to try a local apple jack.

Another weekend, I will have to try to visit that way more often. We already plan to go back visiting during the thanksgiving weekend for a tour.

Ooo that sounds interesting! Where did you get it? One of the local wineries (possibly Glorie but I'm not sure) had a pumpkin wine that was really good. It tasted like graham crackers/pumpkin pie...more of a desert wine I would imagine...would be nice for Thanksgiving. I prefer merlot or cabernet but I'll try anything

I went to a Shawangunk wine event a few years ago and bought a blueberry port that was absolutely delicious. I think the winery is called Duck Walk Vineyards. For the longest time I wanted another bottle but I couldn't remember where I got it. I found a liquor store in NJ that carries it. I was so excited ! Apparently it doesn't take much to make me happy lol
On a chicken-related note:: One of the brown leghorns...it was either Lucy or Ethel... got her name scratched off the Freeloader List today. Mr. Blue the Roo is excused of course, and The Nuggets are still babies so 7/17 are laying. I need to start stockpiling egg recipes!

Iv had a blueberry wine and rasberry wine that was made someplace in NY..I wonder if its the same place!! The store on 9w in Highland carries them, think the stores call shamrock liquor or somthing lol
I always feed the extra eggs to my dogs or back to the chickens..we dont really eat eggs much lol nor do I bake much.

I am not positive where the bottle came from but I believe it was Jenkins and Luken (however its spelled). They are not marketing it yet but will be in the near future. Our neighbor is a botonist his job sends him to all of the local farms and orchards to help them with any plant issues they may have so he sometimes comes home with goodies and shares!

Its 6am and I was woken up by frantic chickens around 5:30....it was a fox..he/she got all 4 of my young hamburgs..I dont know what happened to the other 3 but I know one was pulled through the fence...I cant find the other .
Sorry to hear. Hope you catch whatever it is.

I heard it was sold out which means the traffic getting up to Bethel is going to be brutal (as if it's ever NOT brutal lol). I can't wait to see both ZZ Top and Kid Rock! Although I hope Kid Rock plays more from his older CDs. We saw him when he opened for Bon Jovi a few years ago. He puts on a great show. Uncle Kracker is playing with them too. The Great Jack O' Lantern Blaze is at Van Cortlandt Manor in Croton. Here's the link: http://www.hudsonvalley.org/events/blaze It looks like it's going to be a blast. I wanted to go last year but by the time I'd heard about it was November and I was over Halloween by then. Any more fox sightings??
