Hudson Valley NY *chat thread*

Where is Glorie Winery? I can send my mom, it will do her good to get out. I want to give out hard-to-find wines to my Florida friends this year.
Glorie is in Marlboro...link for the place here : http://www.gloriewine.com/
Ducklings are sooo stinkin' cute! Congratulations! Waiting for pictures....! I'm glad the fox hasn't been back. I keep nagging (errr...reminding!) my DH to enclose the run on The Nugget Coop but he hasn't had the time. He let them outside to freerange last night while we went to a wake. I was a nervous wreck the whole time we were gone. They were fine but it was such a huge risk. I feel bad ~I've been ignoring the big girls. I haven't let them out to forage or even sit in their run to keep them company lately. They're braver now that they're older and cross the road into the woods. It's a PITA to get them back into our yard. Our road is a dead end and very quiet with only a few houses on it but the neighbors are weird and unfriendly and if they have to stop their car to let a chicken cross the road they get this LOOK that I fantasize about slapping off of them. Anyway, I really have to get back onto some kind of schedule. Hopefully once school starts there will be some structure. Perhaps it would free up some time if I stopped playing Candy Crush Saga and Bejeweled Blitz.... ?
bahahaha I quit candy crush only to be dragged right back in by friends needing tickets. What level are you at? I swear they will never let you win that game...it will go on forever.
That's what I don't like about New York (and even some homemade) wines...sometimes they're SO BAD you NEED to spit lol. I came across several of those at the Wreath event. Not sure if it's the soil around here, the grapes (not sweet enough?), or maybe the wine isn't aged long enough? Most seem "young" and too dry and defnitely like vinegar. Some people prefer a drier wine with lots of tannins and absolutely LOVE NY wines. I like a longer, smooth finish :-/ I'm definitely going to try to get over to Glorie. I'd like to try the Cabernet Franc your husband liked and I want to pick up a bottle or 2 of that pumpkin wine for Thanksgiving. If your husband likes red, try 87 South by Robibero. It's a blend of Cabernet Franc, merlot & cabernet. It has a peppery finish...really good! And Stoutridge is a beautiful place. They were our last stop at the Wreath event. The man (was he blonde? about 50?) couldn't wait to get us out of there! Snarky is the perfect word to describe him!
Yep that would be him, he went on and on about how he only employes four people. Him his partner (I believe his wife) and two 'hands' in the vineyard. He was just so full of himself and chemistry and how no other wine really tasted good blah blah blah...it was somewhat insulting. My husband actually prefers pinot, well white wines in general thats why we all kind of had a shock when he purchased the red. He got the red quartet there.

So I am leaving for the weekend to head to virginia and I am debating if I should let my brother in law turn my eggs in the mini eco or let them sit for two days. It's not that I don't trust him, he just shakes and I worry he will drop one.

Serenity! Nice to see you!!! How's things? Sorry about all the fox trouble :-( I thought of you this week. The BYC Coop of the Week is a renovated horse trailer. Last time we chatted, you were renovating yours but I see you decided on a mansion instead! Your new coop is HUGE! It looks great! 36 with 8-10 in the incubator..hmmm...ya...you're in trouble for sure. When are the eggs due to hatch?

I've been good.. Keeping busy, you know, as usual. How've you been? How are all of your chickens? Did you get the goat shelter renovated into another chicken coop? I think last we talked your hubby was thinking about doing that and getting meat birds.

Yea, my chickens had part of a horse trailer as their coop until I built the new one. It was good but the metal was too hot during the summer. I work nights so I don't usually get up until 11ish. If I had locked them in there, they would've cooked! So they slept in there but I always left the door open. They were safe in there and in the goat's pen but they'd get up early in the morning and roam around the farm (they could get out of the goats pen). My brother saw one being chased by a fox at like 5-5:30 one morning. I never saw that chicken again so I'm sure the fox got her. The new coop is nice and cool in the summer so I don't have to worry about what time I let them out. Plus, it's big enough for them to be in all day if I'm not going to be home to lock them in at bedtime. Remember, I work evening/night hours so my animals have to be on my schedule.

In the incubator right now, I have 8 golden comet mama, white silkie roo eggs and 1 white leghorn mama white silkie roo egg due staggered over the next week. One GC egg is pipping now. Due in 3 weeks, I have 3 easter egger mama unknown roo eggs and 3 white silkie eggs (both mama and roo are white silkies). I was done putting eggs in the incubator, then my mother brought me 3 EE eggs. I had 3 silkie eggs that I collected over the past 4 days so I figured I'd throw them in too since they're so small. I don't know what to expect from the silkie eggs.. She just started laying this week.

My next project is to build a grow out pen in the workshop off of my garage. When I had a few chicks, it was no big deal to let them stay in a spare bedroom until they were big enough to go in the coop. I have 25 chicks that hatched since Sunday already (with a 100% hatch rate, although 1 hatched weak and died shortly after). With 15 more eggs left in the incubator, I'd say it's safe to guess that I'll end up with 30 or more chicks. Oh boy!! What was I thinking?!

Hopefully I have a bunch of pullets who will eventually lay eggs. I'm going to let my son start a little egg business. He's only 7 so I think it's a good way to learn more responsibility. Right now he's only collecting 4 eggs a day, 3 eggs some days, so we've only got an extra dozen or so eggs a week right now. The 4 month old girls should start laying pretty soon, then more should start around Thanksgiving and the new chicks around the beginning of next year. Before we know it, we'll be getting TONS of eggs!

I've gotta get ready for work.. I'll try to stick around BYC this time. I miss it :)

Hi Serenity, I don't know you but nice to meet you. It sounds like you have yourself a handful there! I love the babies, they are so much fun. Sorry to hear about your fox troubles, although it seems you worked it all out now. Do you show your silkies?

Anyway...I don't know enough about incubating to offer advice. I hatched 17 chicks about 18 years ago; had NO IDEA what I was doing. I don't even remember if I turned them and I definitely didn't worry about humidity but they all hatched. After a few weeks I didn't know what to do with them (we lived in a 2 BR apt. at the time) Luckily my friend in Stormville took them. Obviously I didn't think that one through very well ! And RE: the Stoutridge Wine Guru...we didn't buy any wine from him either! It wasn't very good so he can take his snarkiness somewhere else and go pick better grapes! Have a nice weekend

2 in the brooder and 1 in the incubator and 1 egg still not hatched in the bator aswell.
Mama ducks killed 4 fighting over them...I thought daddy duck killed the first 3, so I removed him..1 more hatched and I found it dead acouple hours later with its leg half ripped off...so I took the rest of the eggs inside.4 eggs where bad or had dead ducklings inside and 4 had movement or pips.
They are first time moms, so I cant be mad at them..ill just separate them next time they brood.
As for candy crush, iv never played it lol..but I am addicted to Castle Clash!!

Whoa~ Chicken math at its finest! I lost track lol. Sounds like your son will make his first $million before 3rd grade! And your new coop sounds great. It looked well shaded in the pictures you posted. I guess the horse trailer would get pretty hot even with good ventilation given the fact it's metal

. There's so much to consider! Our chickens are doing well. My husband did convert the goat shelter and we got 4 buff orpingtons and 2 EEs in early July. They're about 13 weeks old right now. One of the orps was killed a couple of weeks ago...a fox, coyote or most likely a cat got her since we've seen a stray around here lately. All that was left of her was a pile of feathers and a piece of what my DH thinks was her neck. The others (I call them The Nuggets) were freaked out for days. They must have witnessed the ambush. In total, we have 17 hens and 1 roo. The original girls just started laying in July. We're getting 7-8 eggs/day from them so far. The roo is a blue orpington. He's a monster (huge not mean). He/She/It isn't crowing yet although I thought I heard him try a few weeks ago but he hasn't made a peep since. Maybe it's a she-male...not sure WHAT's going on with that one! Anyway, it's nice to have you back! I'm glad all is well
