So sorry about the silkies :-( Is the silkie roo (Puff Daddy...?) ok?? We've only had 1 casualty so far...one of the buff orpington chicks. We got them in July. Not sure what got to her. Whatever it was, did the job in a corner of the run. All that was left was a pile of feathers. The other 5 were traumatized but okay otherwise. DH really really needs to build a more secure run ASAP. Never enough time. I took some pictures of Coop #2 and the EE/buff orpingtons yesterday but had a problem posting them. Not sure if it's BYC or my computer. Ugh. Anyway...that big egg HAD to hurt!!!! I can't believe how huge it is! Wow!

DH thinks the coop is a little too small now that they're all full grown. We have 13 in that one and 2 of them are (HUGE) orpingtons (one is a roo and he's XXXL !). They're about 5 weeks younger than the rest of the girls. The girls were never very hospitable towards them so they keep to themselves. I think the orps might be sleeping in the nesting boxes even though we put a second roost in not too long ago. Also, the waterer is always knocked over so at some point throughout the day there may be some squabbling especially if there's not enough room for several of them to drink at once. We have a second coop with 3 buff orps and 2 EEs in it so eventually we'll move the 2 big orpingtons into that coop to make room in the 1st coop. It's a bigger than the original coop. In the meantime I'll just keep super pooper scooping the nesting boxes. Ahhh the joy of chickens!

He may be right LS. Though my DH gathered the eggs for the first time by himself today and he said they were filthy. I found no dirt or poo in the nesting boxes so.....I think he was having a twilight zone moment.

How on earth did you get your husband to collect eggs?!?! Iv been trying to get my BF to feed the chickens or do anythig with the chickens for years now lol what is your secret!!
Eggs can get muddy or dirty from the hens moving the eggs around the box with their feet..especially when its wet out!

Husbands........ya gotta love 'em! Although I must say DH and I do share (most of) the chicken duties except for the coop cleaning part. That's my job but I'm good w/that because even though that's dirty work, I know he'll step up when other dirty deeds need to be done like culling, processing, etc. What a guy
