Good Evening HV Peeps~
I took a mental health day with all good intentions of getting some things done outside but the weather didn't cooperate. I did manage to get my hair cut and some laundry done....stalked Facebook for awhile too. I also ventured out to Walmart. It was a loony bin as usual. When I got home there was a break in the rain so I decked the halls of one of the chicken coops with boughs of pine I asked my daughter to break off the tree that's in the parking lot of her job. I didn't think she'd actually do it for me but she did lol! She's such a good girlie...and smart enough to humor me apparently! I'm going to try to get the other coop done tomorrow if I have time. I also want to clean the house, go grocery shopping, make some orange marmalade and start a quilt for my mom's Christmas present. Ambitious, aren't I?....We shall see what actually gets accomplished!

Anyway...sitting here with a glass of wine bored to tears. My son and husband are playing video games. I need a WOMAN cave or a life!

too funny! How is everyones egg production doing thus far? We are only down one egg a day.

I dont get any eggs during winter really...I dont supplement light, so they can rest during the fall and winter..their egg production lasts longer that way..instead of laying till they are 2-4 they will lay until 5-8..not always gguaranteed, but I have 3 hens that are 8 years old and still laying on and off

Wow eight! I have not been supplementing light either. I think it is the breed. I do have a red bulb in there but only turn it on if it is going to be like 15 degrees or less. Do you think that makes a difference?

Hi Everybody~

Still getting 8-10 eggs from 11 chickens although Lucy (or is it Ethel?...can't tell them apart) hasn't laid in several days so maybe she's quitting for the winter months? I have not used any supplemental light. A few of them recently started staying outside the coop door (but inside the run) when they go in to roost at night. They've never done this before. Do they like the cold? Are they afraid of the dark coop? Strange girls...no surprise given their keeper

Lexi~ I wish you had your camera yesterday! I've yet to see my girls' reaction to snow/ice. We only got a dusting today and by the time I got home from work to let them out yesterday, the ice was pretty much gone.

Murphy (the puppy) harassed the Nuggets today. Mr. Blue the Roo got his feathers in a twist and went after him. I wish I'd taken a video. Only caught Murph going after this nugget. She was NOT amused.




Gotta go to bed. I can't believe I'm still awake!

I got my Silver spangled hamburg and one of my SL wyandotte when they were 5 years old..and iv had them for 3+ years now...The wyandotte hen lays on and off now..I get maybe 2 eggs aweek from her...but my Spangled hamburg hen still lays every day! Well not right now ..cause its winter lol
I dont think turning a red light on , on super cold night will effect them. Im worried my birds will need extra heat soon because its going to be in the single digits acouple nights this week I believe! I just packed everyones coop with some old hay this morning.
