Hudson Valley NY *chat thread*

Ill have to check pinterest out! I asked the BF if I could have a compost bin near the garden and he said no because compost piles stink

So I guess ill just keep dumping it in the woods...I feel like its a waste of perfectly good poo lol
Maybe you could make a bin on the edge of your property some where? Or...another composter! Get the DH back to work on building another!
LOL Chicken poop IS a terrible thing to waste! If there's a good ratio of "green" and "brown" ingredients, it won't smell at all. Finding/building something to keep it covered/contained so the critters stay out of it is key. They'll want the food scraps.

DH suggested we pile the coop poop in a corner of the garden because it's fenced in which will keep the dogs away from it since Murphy likes to supplement his diet with deer and chicken poop. I'm afraid it'll take up too much room in the garden so I'm going to have to waste what doesn't fit in the compost barrel. DH might laugh me outta town if I suggest building another one although it really is a good idea to have 2 composters going. I may buy a couple of buckets and make a compost tea so hopefully not everything will be wasted.

DH's cousin messaged me in Facebook a little while ago. He said he has 2 white chicks that he bought in Highland (TSC I assume, but there's a 6 chick minimum....unless he shared an order with somebody who only wanted 4). Anyway...
He said he's crazy (ummm ya) and doesn't know why he got them (because he's crazy). He can't keep them but he wants his grandkids to enjoy them for Easter and asked if I would take them in few weeks. I said NO but I was curious what breeds they are. He didn't know. So I asked what they look like. He said "they have feathers on their feet."

What's 2 more beaks to feed, right?

Hahaha go for it!
Sad that he bought them only for easter tho. Atleast they are gonna go to a good home!
Its 2:30 am right now..and im awake because there are people next door shooting off crappy fireworks and yelling..stupid drunk idiots!!! My dogs are going crazy and I already yelled outside and told them to shut up lol (that has worked before on a number of occasions) but they are still shooting off really loud fireworks. Making me really really mad!

I'm out of my mind for taking them and he's out of his mind for buying them. He's not allowed to have chickens; he lives in a trailer.

Obnoxious !!! I would (barely) tolerate the fireworks much past 9:00 (a little later if it were July) and then I'd lose my patience. Fireworks until 2:30 AM requires a visit from the police. I hope things quieted down and you were able to get some sleep!

Good Evening Everybody~ It felt like Spring took a break today. Spent most of the day cleaning the house...ran to Target for a lot of nothing. I did score some really nice copper herb markers for the garden on clearance. It's the little things.... Lexi~ Congrats on your new Lavender hen and roo!!! Where did you find them? Post pictures! I can't believe she was playing dead...smart girl! Orpingtons are my favorite breed so far. Mine are a little shy but friendly enough to waddle over when they see me with treats. I love how full-figured they are. I was in the basement switching laundry this morning and saw something moving in the window and there was my missing EE. She wasn't broody though....just stuck! There are bushes covering the window well and she must have squeezed in there to check things out or possibly hide. My DD locked up the Nuggets for me last weekend and didn't do a headcount. Two girls from my other coop were left out also. The EE may have hid in the window well for the night and then couldn't get out. The poor thing was thirsty and starving but she was fine otherwise. AND!!! She laid (2) BLUE eggs while she was in captivity! I'd given up on getting blue eggs. Yay!
I am so glad you found her!

Our deep litter w straw is going to be tilled straight into the garden. I will not be harvesting anything from that garden til Summer.

Question to the public...Where do you get your organic mash?

Today is hatching today! Two chicks hatched, one zipping, 3 pipping! Yay :) I have a wire floor in my chicken coop and more then half of their poop fall on the ground. This way I don't have a lot to clean out!

Question, my dad has a friend in Yorktown Heights that has an estate and they grow organic produce and this year they want to start selling eggs. They have a coop and all the pens already, they just need the chickens but they would like to start with POL pullets. Do you guys know of anywhere we can find a dozen pullets in the area? Preferably EEs because they want to sell eggs that are different. Let me know :)
