Hudson Valley NY *chat thread*

So by me it rained allllll day and my chickens are soaked... tonight its going to get into the 20s so I put a heat lamp in my coop so that I can keep the windows open for ventilation. Do you think this is the right move? I didnt use a heat lamp all winter but I dont want this extreme weather to hurt them...

I am worried too. I did not go the heat lamp route but maybe that would help with all the humidity. I am hoping with their sleeping coop being nice and dry a good couple of shakes and they should be ok.

We had a couple of days during the winter where it was actually raining then the temperture dropped...same situation...and they were fine. After all the extremes last winter they all kept laying and only stayed inside 2 days that were extremely blustary. No heatlamp, no lights, and no lost chickens except for the rooster's comb. I was amazed but Mother Nature does take care of them. I did take down the feedbags that were providing extra wind blockage a couple of weeks ago.

They were fine. They were just served breakfast in their coop because they are refusing to come out even though it is pretty nice out now. I guess they are on strike and sick of bad weather....

Well I kept the heat lamp on and it stayed only around 36 in the coop so it wasnt hot but it was above freezing. They were okay tho and seemed to enjoy the heat lamp. I didnt want to use the heat lamp tho and I went all winter without it but at the same time I would feel so guilty if they all got frostbite last night from being soaked in below freezing weather

Carousel so sorry about your too. I had to cull the little silver guy today, splayed leg was really bad and he was in pain. It was really difficult, but I couldn't let him suffer.

OMG! So sorry again Lexi! Do you have a trap?
I have a limited amount of space so I can only commit to 2 lavender chicks for now. Did you see the pictures I posted? Is the light one with a darker hourglass shape on its back a lavender??
