Hudson Valley NY *chat thread*

On another note, we are looking at buying a coop. We have six hens on the way but want to plan on room for 12. Are there any local resources for coops at a reasonable price. We are currently leaning towards a coop from cottagekits at this point.

Hi,
newbie here from Middletown NY!
We are planning to get started in this chicken adventure next month. We would like to start with a small flock of three or four pulllets to see if we can handle it. I was wondering if anybody from this
area has a small prefab coop for sale? I have the plans for the Wichita coop, but before we spend big bucks building a nice coop we want to make sure that we are able to handle this new adventure...
Thank you!

Hello everyone,

We've been thinking about raising chicks now for the last few years and I think we are gonna just go for it....but...before we do, a question. We live in Blooming Grove NY, does anyone know if its all OK with the town or is there something we need to know?

Thanks all

It depends on zoning. You have to call your town hall and ask. It should only take a few minutes for them to look up the address and let you know if your property is zoned for it. Good luck!

I am in blooming grove and can tell you exactly what the ordinance is and it is pretty stupid. You must have 5 acres and then you may have 2 fowl. or 2 swine. or 2 horses, or 2 goats, or 2 cows!!? for each additional 5 acres you may add one more. SO if you have 10 acres of land you can have 3 chickens. or 3 horses. or 3 goats. the zoning laws don't differentiate between farm animals. I have 5.5 acres and VERY nice neighbors that agree that my 8 hens are alot quieter than a barking dog. but I am still breaking the law, technically.

Wow! That is the dumbest thing I heard. By me its not allowed to exceed 1000 lbs per acre for poultry.

Just wanted to put it out there that I have 2 pairs of 9 week old sulmtalers. They are a very rare dual purpose breed of chickens renowned for their meat. If anyone is looking for a dual purpose heritage breed of chicken, this is definitely a breed to consider. These are the gold wheaten variety. They came directly from greenfire farms. I was looking to get silver wheaten. They are $60 a pair for the month of April.

Brznwench, after seeing your post I checked with the town and you're 100%. Town wants you to have 25 acres for 6 chicks....ridiculous. Funny thing is I know of people who have chickens in town but nowhere near the lot size required...maybe they don't enforce it.
