It is not just about slow connections but also those of us with satellite internet where download allowances are in place may have problems. My blog and my husband's online activity already cause usage overages for which we have to pay $12.00 per day to reverse. I am hoping I will still be able to check in from time to time though.
The ads do support this site and help them keep the lights on, as do the GFM memberships. However, if you're in a situation where the ads impact your ability to visit the site or cause other problems for you (not just here, but on other sites too) there are easy solutions. There are ad-blockers for most browsers, check for add-ons or plug-ins. (with Firefox, go to tools/add-ons, with Chrome click the little wrench in the upper right, go to tools/extensions). A simpler method (on Windows machines, don't know if it works for other systems) but you need to feel a bit computer comfortable to do it, is a "hosts file". Just Google "Hosts File". It's a little text file that you put in your system folder that blocks the main domains that pump out the ads.
Like I say, keep in mind that you cost BYC a few pennies a day if you block the ads, but if it costs you to view them, and if they keep you off the site, consider that as a viable option.
