I have my birds in an aviary outside. There are 2 males and 9 females. The males have been inside for a while because I was letting a quail hatch her eggs. Now the girl who hatched her eggs is inside with chicks. So at the time if prolapse there were 8 girls and 2 guys. I feed them a gamebird crumble along with mealworms, watermelons, and whatever treats I find. What exactly do you feed your birds and how many do you have in this cage? How many males versus females?
Do you feed them oyster shell or another type of calcium supplement?I have my birds in an aviary outside. There are 2 males and 9 females. Once you're quail reach 6 to 8 weeks old you can move them to chicken layer crumble feed.
The high protein game bird feed is only needed for the first 6 - 8 weeks of life.
I move all of my birds over at 6 weeks. I'd like to get them started on the layer feed which has higher calcium before they start laying eggs.
If you plan on keeping them on the game bird feed you must add a calcium supplement.
Thank you guys for the love and support. I had Harley for almost a year. I appreciate your guys' affirmations that culling her was the humane way to go about it. Otherwise I would have felt tremendous guilt, and when the thought comes that I was lazy, and simply didn't want to help, I can brush it away because I know I did the right thing, and that it was not laziness that led to this, just bad luck. Harley didn't know this, but I hatched some of her eggs out, and she is a mom to 3 chicks. One of my other hens, named Evelyne, is taking care of them. They will be beautiful and black, just like her.
