Found this egg in the coop this evening...ouch!

it measures 3 inches in height. It's soooo big that i can't even close a carton 1/2 way...size of 2 ee eggs in 1. I'm thinking it's a double yolker... My 3 ee's are only 9 months old...

Have you ever had something like this before? if so, what causes it?

thanks!

Ouch is right! She should start to lay regular sized eggs once her 'laying mechanism' is regulated. It's not uncommon for new layers to lay unusually large eggs at first. I had an EE who laid a 3"er like yours. She gave me several double yolkers before starting to lay more normally sized eggs.

Hi,

I recently got two huge eggs like that from one of my EE's. The first one was a double-yolker, the second I haven't cracked open yet.

I think the reason is because she is a new layer (mine only started laying in January and is now 10 months old) but she does lay unusually large "regular" eggs also. This leads me to think that she will probably always lay larger eggs than normal. Her regular eggs weigh from 2.6 to 2.8 ounces and her huge eggs are about 3.7 ounces.

Hope this helps!
