Huge Eye

Had the horse vet out today for my horses annual shots. He took a look a my chicken and while he said he isn't an expert he agreed he thought it was an infection and showed me where he thought I should cut.. I will try to press on it and expell it like Melissa suggested but it is a hard mass, so afraid I will have to cut it out. I really don't have a problem trying to lance it, I just HATE the idea of cutting into her without any kind of numbing agent. Do you think anbesol would numb it sum, or would that hurt the eye?

I am not sure about anbesol. It is probably already sore so a quick cut with a sharp knife won't be as big of deal. It will feel much better to the chicken if can get it out.
If you choose to use anbesol, just don't get it in the eye.
Good luck!

After the procedure, should I keep her in a cage with pine shavings to keep her from getting dirt in the cut? Do I put anything on the cut, neosporin, verimicin eye ge:?? Today would be her third day for Tylan, keep giving it to her or give her as shot of penicillian instead?

I'd keep her on a towel, but I'm funny that way, lol. Talk to your horse vet and ask him about the antibiotics. Also, tell him about this link:

Okay what I thought was her eyeball was that huge nasty hard pus glob and what I thought was her pupil was dirt stuck to the glob. Her eyeball was behind it. There was no way to squeeze it out as it was covered with a membrane that we had to slice open to get to the glob. There was so much blood, we kept wiping it with gauze, I was so worried she would drown in her own blood. The glob was so big and so hard the only option we had was to cut into it and start cutting it out in pieces. My friend is a vet tech so she did the dirty work, while I held on to the bird. She would cut into and scoop some out in little pieces and the lavage the area with saline water to get the smaller pieces out and continued with that till she had dug it all out, at least we couldn't see any more or feel anymore. What is left now is a lot of the membrane that was around the globa and it is attached to her. I didn't know what to do...will it shrink up? Just as we finished the last of the work, and I picked her up she dropped an egg...it was obvious not ready to come out as it was rubbery. I am hoping we didn't put her into shock and she dies on me now. I have her in a crate and she was looking fine. I gave her some dried mealworms and she ate them. I have attached a couple of photos, one is the pieces we got out her eye. Kind of hard to tell how big they were but some were pretty huge! Kind of looked like dried up hard cottage cheese. The other is her eye after we were done.

Now the questions is...How do I prevent this from happening again? Obviously it must have been like that before I got her and I didnt' realize how bad it had gotten. I have made a pact to look at every chicken closer now to be sure I don't see anything odd going on.

Thanks for your help and your advice, please keep it coming!
