Huge Shed / Barn - Craigslist - Cheap, but have to move it

They want $500 for it, but it would need to be taken apart and moved and reassembled. There is a shed moving company that quoted me $1,800 to tear down, move, rebuild with new roof.

What do you think?

I'm a builder and have been in the trades since 1964, and from my experience with these types of buildings I don't think that taking it apart will go very well. To much damage will be incurred during disassembly to allow it to be rebuilt effectively. When you factor in the price, the cost of materials that will have to be replaced it starts to not look like a good deal. Then if you figure in your time you will be much better off to start from scratch.

If you have the skills, I would concider doing it your self. Find out if they built it with screws or nails. (hope for screws, easier to remove without damage.) Dissassemble it keeping the parts as big as you and a couple people can lift and move. Rent a UHaul. The wood is worth a lot more than $500.

I barely have the skills but I definitely don't have the time.

The one at lowes came out to $3,500. It looks nice, but isn't assembled, right?

I figure for $2,300 ($500 + $1,800) I could get a very nice shed installed.

You might consider a house moving company that would move the stucture without disassembling it. It looks to have a concrete pad floor. That is another expense to factor in.

The Lowes shed looks good too, but the problem with these things is with city building codes and permits. Check out the legalites before you commit to buying anything.

Where can you legally put this structure on your lot? If you draw the attention of a city building inspector, he is going to look at more than the shed. He just might see an illegal and unpermitted chicken coop.

I'm gonna agree with Opa, I have moved a similar building (12x16) using those big jacks double wide house crews use. It worked out okay for me, but I live in a very rural area and we picked a early sunday morning to move it down the road. The few buildings I have torn apart to rebuild....well, pretty much Opa (excuse the pun) nailed it.

Decide on what you want and start from scratch.....maybe a couple of building contractors from Michigan might show up for the right price and build you your dream.

hahaha, thanks everybody! No wonder they are getting rid of it cheap!

I wonder if the wood is worth anything, offer them a really low price and just pay some haulers to tear it down as best they can and move all the bits over here to re-assemble into a new structure.

...or just have some Michigan experts come out and help me build a shed (and a desperately needed new coop). I'll clean off the table saw, skill saws and the compound miter saw in anticipation of the visit!

It's only 12x20'

The local amish shed distributor (no he's not amish) here has a trailer that sucks those babies right on up there and he cruises them anywhere! The last building I bought was 12x30 and I paid $7900. for it I think. I bought a 10x16 run in shed for $3000.

I would call the shed dealers (perhaps the one the seller got it from and see what they charge for delivery. Heck...if it were near me it'd be sold!
