Huge size discrepancy

Sigh. Somebody needs to tell her why she has to butcher them.

Cornish X chickens, when not butchered at 8 weeks will not stop growing. They will suffer in the heat, and they usually have awful joint issues from carrying around all the extra weight. If you want to keep them, you need to keep them on a diet, that's basically starving them, as their fast growing bodies need lots of food. Its cruel to keep them past the 8wk cull date, basically

give s/he to a farm to process if you are unwilling to do it yourself.

This is sad. I did not sign up for this 😅 We have processed about 4 roosters we couldn’t find home for ourselves. Not a pleasant task in the least. Makes me feel horrible for the rest of the day. But it can be done. Thanks for the info.

yeah, It seems to have happened a LOT recently. I think they get mixed up and the TSC people just grab a white bird. That could be the white bird you wanted, or the one you didn't.

If you tell TSC they'll replace it since you are gonna need to process it.

people are going to tell you that you don't have to or that you should keep them as a pet but I assure you, thats a cruel way to keep a bird.. the bird will always be hungry on a resitricted diet. Plus it will be really hard to manage 1 meat bird with a special diet in a flock of "normal" birds.

sometimes they'll just die one day b/c they're so big..

Even as a 5 day old chick it almost filled my whole hand! I wondered what was up.. Oh! I’ll have to look into contacting them. Thanks

I got four chicks from TSC all hatched on the same day and now are 4 weeks old. Rhode Island Reds and some labeled Leghorns.. well.. the Leghorns are HUGE. Even their legs are like tree trunks! It’s hard to get a picture accurately showing it. Is this common with leghorns? Has something been mislabeled? Just really curious.
Those white ones are Cornish Cross. They won‘t live long. It’s best to butcher them.

Thanks, DL. You did a better job than I could have. I've heard that they die young anyway, and tend to have health problems. Trying to keep them as pets is just going to make bird and owner both miserable eventually.

So today I made a chuck roast in the crock pot, and it was the best I ever made. Soooo tender! I dredged it in seasoned flour and browned it in oil in my cast-iron skillet first. I put the veggies (carrots, onions, little potatoes) in the pot first with beef broth, with the meat on top, so it didn't cook in liquid. Amazing! I've been cooking these things wrong my whole life. I also found directions for making gravy from the pan drippings. Oh. My. Lands. We ate hours ago and I still feel stuffed. 🤣
