We know that what is best for them is not always the easiest thing for us.. Their pain is over but ours will linger for a little while.. I will say however, that culling be it for food, protection or mercy will get easier.. The first time can mess you up.. Just know in your heart that you did the right thing and we all have to do it at some point so you have lots of support and information...
shovel, or put it in a plastic bag, lay im on the concrete and a good hard stomp is all it takes. This way you can't see any thing and it's fast and painless. sorry about the chick.
I'm sorry for your loss. I use Starter fluid sprayed heavy on a paper towel and chick placed in a little airtight container (preferably not see through) and then put the paper towel in and close. They go to sleep because of the ether. Every person has a different way.
I had to cull a chick last month and used the vinegar and baking soda technique It took two seconds and the chick was gone. I do not believe he suffered. I am sorry for your loss
You take a larger container that you can seal and put two smaller containers in. Put baking soda in one and then put the chick in another smaller container nesteled as comfortable as possible. Add vinegar to the baking soda container then seal the larger container. My chick literally passed in two seconds or even less. I do not believe it suffered. His head just laid down and it was over. If you search for CULL you will find a lot of posts regarding this.
There is some pretty heated debate about the baking soda and vinegar method. Basically there is some argument about how they die. Some who seem very well informed state that they don't just "fall asleep" and die. Basically, you deprive them of oxygen and they suffocate to death. This I read...after having dispatched a chick that way. What I saw, was that the chick stumbled a little, let out a final death chirp, and then collapsed. I don't know...I don't like having to do it, but it has to be done from time to time. Personally, after reading everything, I'll probably whack it with a shovel, maybe use the scissors. What a crappy thing to have to go through....
