HUMANURE COMPOSTING

FUnny I was listening to NPR yesterday and they were talking about this very subject , appying it in another country because the woman handle it by hand and to put it on the fields barefoot. NOT a good idea.

I am all for recycling nutrients, but having said that, a word of caution per the NPR information. Because of the possible pathogens, composting for 6-9 months was the recommendation to kill pathogens. And Handle with gloves and wear shoes.

France was doing this back in the 1940"s. GO for it!!

Good luck.

Nobody asked my opinion here, and I know I should keep my mouth shut, but it seems to me this comes under the heading of "just because you can do something, it doesn't mean you should" and "more trouble than it's worth". But if it makes you happy, go ahead. Who am I to rain on your parade? Plus I have done things my friends and relatives thought were just as harebrained as I think this project is. Good luck. Maybe you will get it right next time around.
it also goes under the "what the h**l was I thinking" category.

Im not outside jumping around yelling" look what ive done with my poop!"

This project is hairbrained, and I just wanted to know if I could do this and stomach it.

done and done.

im letting it settle for a year whilst I build up a new pile.

I did a rough breakdown of how much waste we create using a flush toilet vs. composting. I shocked myself.
Very eye opening isn't it?? Now try to calc the production of 10 horses or 10,000 chickens in a poultry barn. Or 50,500 people in one town. We need to compost this stuff!! Definitely a job that will alway be needed is waste management. Town one town over can stink to high heaven at the sewerage treatment plant-- on rare occasions of course. The smell is a reminder that they are still there!! lol

Sometimes I read a thread just to see what the deal is.

Sometimes I read a thread because the title catches my eye.

Sometimes I read a thread and I sit back and say ------ well nevermind, I ain't nobody.

Where I lived in California there was a large market for livestock manure from commercial operations. Horse manure from the race tracks went to the mushroom farms. Chicken and cow manure was spread on the fields and orchards. The companies that dealt with manure profited two ways. They were paid to scrape the corrals and remove the manure and they were paid for the manure and to spread it. As for humanure, I am sticking with my flush toilet, thank you.

Thank the gods those horses and chickens aren't "producing" into drinking water. Those 50,500 humans, though ... oy. They could be producing some crazy gardens in a couple of years with all that stuff.
