ok so i have some quail and chicken eggs in the incubator that are both suppose to hatch the ninth. i have an automatic egg turner in there and i know i am suppose to take it out the sixth. i just candled them about 20 minutes ago and almost all of the eggs are dark black except for the air bubble so there fertile. so my question is about humidity. i havent really bothered with it but i kno it is suppose to be up around 70 at the last three days...i think...is that right?? but i dont kno how to do any thing about humidity and i dont have anything to measure it so i was thinking of just sitting a bowl of water in there. is it possible that it could make it go to high or will that not matter? this is my first time hatching and ive read alot about the shell getting to dry and the chick not being abble to break free

Will you post pics? I can't wait to see the babies! What varieties?

I'm no expert, just doing my first hatch myself...but I understand that for the last 3 days you should raise humidity to 60-65%...more than that and your chicks could drown upon pipping.

All the best,
Emily

If the humidity in the incubator gets too high then condensation will build inside the air bubble of the egg. When the chick pips, she will get a mouthful of water.

Of course, I'd love to hear others chime in too because I know there's lots to the humidity.

oh ok. so i cant just sit a bowl of water in there?

I am no expert by no means. I only hatched out one clutch one eggs but since you need an answer by tomorrow I'll try to help you out and tell you what I did during my hatch.

Can you get something to read humidity? I had a cheapo thermometer thingy with a relative humidity reader at the bottom and it worked fine for me. In my little still-air styrofoam incubator I had 10 out of 11 hatchable eggs hatch. (hatchable meaning those that made it to day 18) I had the water pan filled at the bottom and I added two wet sponges. Whenever the humidity dropped, I'd pour water with a straw through the little air holes on top of the incubator down onto the sponges. I used warm water because if you use cold water the temperature could drop.
The humidity stayed around 60-75% or so I believe. I think sometimes it got to around 80%. Well, that's what that cheapo thermometer read anyways. You don't want too much humidity like the previous person said. Chicks need oxygen and too much water in the air could drown the chick. 60-70% worked for me.

I don't know if this will work for you because I don't know if you have the same incubator as me. Every incubator is different. But that's how I raised the humidity in my hatch.

ok i have an lg incubator but do i raise it on the sixth or is the day they,re suppose to hatch? and i have a digital thermometer that also tells humidity but it maulfunctions everytime i put it in the other incubator. i guess it gets to hot

I think mine's an LG too (Little Giant?). You raise the humidity and stop turning the eggs on the 18th day of incubation. And don't open the incubator until they hatch!

Everyone says on here how it's vital for eggs about to hatch to have constant temperature and humidity. So don't open the incubator starting from the 18th day to until they hatch.

Good luck! I hope I helped.. I'm a newbie at this too somewhat but I've read a lot on this stuff.

ok i hatch around 100 to 150 chicks amonth in my LG's ( i fill all the trays in bottom up with water on day 18 and put a 2x2 sponge in under the front hole so i can add water when it is needed) go to wal-mart and get a cheap humidty guage cost around ten $. i keep my humidty at 55 to 65% for the last 3 days or till all have hatched, it has took as long as 24 days for some to hatch. hope this helps pm me for more info william

l have a hb no fan and on day 18 i fill the bottom pan with water same time i take turner out and if you eggs are good you should have no problem now they could hatch a day or two early depending on temp during incubating it is really a trial and eror process keeping a daily log through out the 21 days has been helpful to me to learn from my mistakes
