Hunched up duck.

We have been washing it with iodine, and she is walking perfectly fine now, should I still give her the antibiotics?
Does the leg still have any heat in it? If it does, then yes. It sounds as if this was a nasty bit of work and even though she is walking on it now, not being able to 'see' the bird, I don't know if it went into the bones or joint. If it did, it can become encapsulated there and fester with not too many signs until it's too late or death. Me? I would as a matter of course, just to be sure nothing else is going on.

I just got through reading back a bit in this thread. If you don't want to give the oral antibiotic, that's is your right as the person charged with the care of your animals. I also gave you my opinion and why I have it. All you can do is take these ideas and use them to the best of your ability or ignore them completely. The choice is all yours.

Amiga was one of the first people I learned from when I started with my flock of ducks and geese. Miss Lydia came into the picture soon afterwards. These two wonderful people give up their free time to help me, you and so many others who have issues or no clue what to do. Believe me when I say, if either of these two, said I should be doing something, I'd be sitting up and taking notice right quick. There would be no hesitation to act on their advice and any explanations could be gotten later, as I know they are acting and offering information for the welfare of my bird. The knowledge each of these two have is unbelievable and the combination of them both....trust me, they wouldn't steer you wrong.

Obviously you didn't read very well...and this comment has irked the day lights out of me.
Please kindly either stop making assumptions, or read thoroughly before you comment and try telling me what you think I'm saying.
1. I said I didn't want to over medicate without a cause and I was trying to make sure of things BEFORE i did anything.
2. I said that the drugs were ordered when i first was told about them and I didnt worry to much when they didnt arive right away because of how well she is doing.
3. I listed other drugs I have to use until the drugs I ordered would come in and if they would be ok, which no one has answered yet.
and lastly...
4. I am listening to them thank you.

Please...if your going to comment like this, make sure you actually read what I write first before you make outlandish assumptions. This is seriously making me not want to have anything to do with BYC. I was warned about stuff like this but I thought nothing of it, now I am beginning to think twice...

Everyone read this.
I just got a call from the store and the drug should be in either tomorrow or Thursdays.
So can everyone please lay off and stop talking to me like I'm purposefully neglecting my duck.
Thank you...

Just for future referrence, Sulmet could have been used to treat until the Duramycin-10 came in. The trouble with it is is that it is harsh on their digestive track and honestly, it doesn't work for the staph the way a tetracycline will.

Here she is soaking her feat before we scrub them with betadine and then pack them with iodine and triple antibiotic.

And here is where the bumble's were. The one on top looks worse then it was,my husband, as sweet as he is, went to help me deal with the bumble, and instead of cutting into the bumble to remove the plug...he just cut it off after misreading the instructions X_X I took over from there and had him just hold her...
th.gif

She survived though! As you can see.
The bumble on the bottom was the worst swelling wise, but it has gone down and honestly the plug was really tiny? Wierd.

My friend helped me soak and scrub her foot today, and this picture was just cute and I had to share.

Since I haven't had to deal with bumble in any of my ducks, I'll let someone with experience talk about what they see, Sounds like your doing a good job cleaning them out It might not be a bad idea to give her some oral antibiotic just because she had heat in her leg and foot. Just as a precaution. and I have to tell you that is one precious duck and the pic where your friend is holding her is sweet.

That is Malady :D
She is a sweet little darling that is for sure.
She is my favorite duck out of everyone, and next year I hope she goes broody so i can let her hatch out her eggs :D
As soon as I get the Antibiotic in then i'll give it to her, tomorrow or Thursday it should be here.
Shes a lilac, molting like crazy, but a beautiful little lady :)

I actually think her feet look pretty good. We shall see after the scabs heel and the swelling goes down more. I've seen some nasty bumblefoot on some ducks with huge swellings.

I googled ducks with bumble foot and found some seriously bad infections, then I googled staph infections and found some really really bad swelling and nothing compared to her foot.
I still don't think she has an infection in there due to how well and quickly she is healing, but once I pick the meds up I'll give it to her just to be safe.
Any idea how much longer she should be separated, and how long she should have the medication?
