So I was watching the birds (the wild ones, not the chickens) this morning, sipping my tea and thinking about how nice it was to see the sun, when I saw an unusual sight. Normally we don't get squirrels here, we have corn fields and meadows and not too many trees around us so I guess they don't like it. But here one was, hopping timidly across the grass! It was all fluffy from the cold, and kept sitting up and looking around. Adorable, in my opinion, though I know squirrels drive other people crazy. Then I was distracted by my sister coming in and forgot about the squirrel. A few minutes later a movement catches my attention and I turn back to the window. Struggling across the lawn, heavily burdened, is a black cat! With what might she be burdened, you ask? With the adorable rodent I had been watching moments before! I ran out the door with a yelp and no jacket, but kitty had already rounded the corner of the house and was no where to be seen. I called and called and searched in all of the usual places, but she was gone. Then I realized that my cats were still inside this chilly morning, and that this black cat must have been the local stray. She must have been hungry indeed, poor dear; my guys stick to mice and voles. Well, I suppose she is well fed now! And I got my exercise for the day.

poor squirrel.

Send that cat over this way! We need one like her! I swear, if you lived where I live right now you would be sick of the things. And it seems like their numbers go up ten-fold every year!

Did yall hear about that old guy who died, his folks went down in his basement and they found... Hundreds of stuffed squirrels in civil war uniforms, with little rifles and everything set up all over the place! How neat is that?

We had gray squirrels in the city and they were annoying. Here, though, where it's more rural, red squirrels abound and they're awesome.

Ugly Cowboy, are you serious? That's hilarious.

HorseFeathers, I like red squirrels too, though as you can imagine we don't see many of them either.

Year of the Rooster and Wifezilla, be careful, I might just send you a cat in the mail!

My friends with trees all laugh when I get excited about a squirrel.

We have 2 house cats and 3 barn/garage cats. The barn cats adopted us, our neighbors moved and left them in their barn. They keep all the rodents down. Get rid of unwary birds too. The 2 house cats bring all the dead stuff inside to give to us. At least we don't have mice.

The kitty wasn't necessarily hungry. My Marie is eight years old and unless we're very careful, she gets too fat to groom herself. She still gets squirrels sometimes. She doesn't eat them. It's pretty much a hobby.
