Ch.16
We walked out of the clearing and backtracked to the cabin, the rest of our pack that had been at the edge of the clearing following suit.
“How’s Amy’s training coming along,” I asked.
“Fine.”
“Oh.”
We walked in an awkward silence similar to the one earlier in the clearing.
I began to sway to and fro while I walked, just for something to do.
We kept walking, far past the cabin, getting into vegetation that grew thicker and thicker.
Finally, I glimpsed a slight movement ahead.
Pitch black fur flashed through the trees followed by black fur which was tinted brownish red.
Mr. Samson and Amy are racing!!
I watched as they ran circles around us, then stopped suddenly, right in front of us.
I was jealous of how well Amy could “step on the brakes”, hoping that someday I could stop that fast without falling on my face.
“Amy, Lena,” mom started, “we’re gonna have you two race!!”
I stared at her, thinking she was crazy.
Amy looked at me in disbelief, “That’s not fair!! I thought you said that Lena wasn’t normal!”
“Yes, but you have no other competitor who is as new to this as you. If you’d like, she could go easy on you.”
A familiar voice rang out through the trees, “Trust me, you’re an even match…”, Cole stepped through the trees, “So I was right! She is a white wolf!”
My pack turned to face him, tensing to fight.
His pack began to pop out of the trees, “We could use a wolf like her.”
Dad looked at us, and I got another rush of tingling in my head. I answered the mental hotline once again, “We’re leaving. Now! Get to the Tahoe.”
I looked at Amy, and we started running to the truck.
Garry followed us.
“Wait!” Cole yelled, but he made no move to get past the pack, even though they outnumbered our parents now.
Garry led us into the cabin, and gave us our clothes, which had apparently been taken from the truck.
“Find a room and change.”
“But we don’t know how!”
“Just think about being human again. Hurry!”
I turned and ran into a bedroom, locking the door behind me, and thinking of being human.
Pain ran through me as my bones reshaped themselves.
The change took about as long as it had the last time, but it took more energy out of me.
I was tired, but still rushed to get dressed.
When I came out of the bedroom, Garry was waiting for me, holding the rest of the pack’s clothing.
“Now they won’t know who the white wolf is, since they’ve never seen your human form before.”
“But won’t they be able to smell me?”
“I gue-” Amy came out of the bedroom, and he turned, rushing out the door, and yelling for the rest of our pack.
They came rushing out of the woods just as he opened up the trunk door and they hopped in. Dancer hopped in after them.
Amy opened the right door and pulled back on the lever, waving for me to get in the middle seat.
I jumped up, and sat, pulling on my seatbelt as she pushed the seat back, and hopped into the truck, closing the door behind her.
Garry shut the trunk and ran around the side of the truck, getting into the driver’s seat, and starting the truck, closing the door as I looked back at our parents, who hadn’t gotten the chance to change.
They were practically piled on top of one another, and Amy’s parents jumped up onto my seat, her mom stepped down and laid down left of my feet, partially covered by the seat.
The rest of them laid down, too.
“What about the license plate, can’t they see it?”
“We’ll switch it back anyway, so it doesn’t matter.”
Garry pulled out just as Cole’s pack reached the truck.
“Ok.” I said.
I was tired, but I stayed up a little longer because I was still excited.
When I finally went to sleep, I dreamed I was running through the woods again, but this time, without Cole.
Without anyone.
