Ch.17
My dad woke me up this time, batting my arm repeatedly, and pulling at my sleeves.
He was still a wolf, but as I looked around, I realized, everyone was.
My head tingled again, as I was now relatively used to, and I received the message, “You finally decide to wake up?” It was dad.
“Yup,” I thought back, “Why are you all changed?”
“We’re at a park.”
I looked around, but all I saw were trees, “What kind of a park doesn’t have a playground?”
“The wild kind.”
“You mean like Yellowstone?”
“More like a game reserve than Yellowstone. There are no geysers here.”
I looked around again, and then unbuckled and got out of the truck.
Dad followed, and the pack ran up to me, accompanied by the strong scent of pine.
“There are no bears, right?” I asked jokingly.
“No. No bears, now change.”
I hestated. The change hurt, but I needed to go with them.
I thought the magical thought, and began to change.
This time the pain was milder, and I changed faster.
I got up and panted, looking at my paws which were once again white, then at the pack.
“Do I have to worry about this here?” I held up my paw.
“Not that I know of. Humans that come here may think you’re weird and want to run tests on you, so I think you might want to change, though.”
“Great.”
I looked around at the forest, and picked a blackish brown.
I looked down and watched as my paws changed color.
My mom stepped on my pantlegs and I pulled forward, squeezing out of them.
She walked around me, and stepped on my sleeves next.
I pulled out of them and picked up the clothes, taking them back to the truck, and closing it behind me.
I felt the wind blowing on my fur, and relaxed some.
We began walking through the forest of the game reserve, watching as squirrels ran away.
“Do they know we’re not wolves?”
“No.”
“Oh”
I watched the trees as we passed them, and tested my tail, swinging it back and forth.
Dad sniffed at the air and spoke aloud, “There are real wolves in this reserve, so be on alert.”
I looked through the trees, wondering where they were.
“They’re far from here,” he said, looking at me, “don’t worry.”
“Where are we gonna sleep?”
“You decide. You can either sleep in that cramped truck, or out here where humans won’t see anything out of the usual…”
“I guess I’ll take out here in the dirt…”
We walked further away from the truck, and finally got to a spot my parents thought would suffice.
The ground was covered in leaves, but they saw something I didn’t, because they began to sniff the brush.
Finally, I decided to walk over, and smelled the faint scent of… Well, It smelled like us, but stronger.
“An abandoned wolf den.”,my dad said.
They pushed through the brush and into a hole I hadn’t seen. Amy’s parents, then Amy, then Garry, then my dad, me, and my mom.
Inside, it looked similar to the den beneath the cabin.
Mom looked around, “This’ll do.”
“If the wolves don’t want it back,” I muttered.
“Find a spot end get to sleep.”
I walked around the den and was the last to pick a spot.
I was the nearest to where we had entered.
I didn’t want to sleep.
What ifs passed through my head.
What if Cole found us? What if the wolves wanted their den back? What if the men who had tried to kill Amy and I found us?
I didn’t even want to think of the answers.
After about an hour of scaring myself, I jumped off the train of thoughts, and boarded the dream express.
It was no better.
I dreamt I was once again running through the woods, but this time, away from someone.
