I've shot deer at over 300 yards with a .243, a 6mm, even an antique 32-40. Shot placement is MOST important, and many folks who use too much gun and learn to flinch (whether they realize they are flinching or not) do not have as good of shot placement as someone who doesn't flinch.

Since I've gotten older and wear bifocals now, I like a real good set of optics, too.
But really, a deer under 30 yards with a bow is the most exciting to me!

ha was just thinking the same thing. I got my wife a .243 a few years back. She loved it and hunted a lot with me. Lats year she didnt hunt much so I took it for most of the season.
Man you can stack them up with that thing. Shot 3 deer with it, none ever flinched, dropped dead on the spot.
Like you said, placement is the main thing. If you hit them right anything will do. Heck I killed my first deer (actually the first day my dad ever took me) at 8 years old with a .22
Was 250 pound, 130 inch 8 point. He ran about 100 yards and was done.....

I've used a 20 ga for 33 years........ always worked well for me. Even at a good distance.

I've got a .30-06 too, and if I deer hunt with my son, I have to carry it because he mooches my .243. When he's bigger I'll get it back, as I gave him his own .30-06 on his first day big game hunting. I can shoot it fine, and I could shoot my husband's 300 Win Mag fine if I had to also. That's a fine elk gun right there, and good for long distances. If I had an elk in my sights at 500 yards, I'd shoot it and worry about the bruise later.

Going up again after bear tonight. My dogs are coming along nicely.

90% of the time I use a 308 simply because it speed w/ a heavy bullet in the thick brush. The other 10% of the time I use a 300 WSM because they are 300+ yard shoots with a ton of punch. We do a LOT of long range hunting in MO, so the thought of knocking one down at 500+ makes me giddy.

I've lived and hunted in an area where up until just a few years ago, shotguns were the only legal firearm for large game. So I grew up shooting slugs and learned that way. Now that we can use rifles, I stick to my shotgun... I am so familiar and comfortable with it that I feel it makes me a better hunter than if I switched to a rifle.

chickend, I hear there's good hog range to the west of us, and I know hog dog people, but I've never done it. We always go east to hunt. I'd love to try it, that's for sure!
