I've shot deer at over 300 yards with a .243, a 6mm, even an antique 32-40. Shot placement is MOST important, and many folks who use too much gun and learn to flinch (whether they realize they are flinching or not) do not have as good of shot placement as someone who doesn't flinch.
Since I've gotten older and wear bifocals now, I like a real good set of optics, too.
But really, a deer under 30 yards with a bow is the most exciting to me!
