Hunting has been a wash for me this year. I have killed a few but I have been unable to put my oldest son on a deer. My youngest, 8 years old, managed a yearling with a crossbow in September. It was his first ever. My oldest son passed on the same deer a week before.
My father was sick all Summer and passed away last Monday. The time I spent in the woods in the early season I spent it just pondering the situation. I did see a lot of deer early in the season but had so much to do and had so many things on my mind I just decided not to shoot them.
Now when I have time and want to kill one I am not seeing any. My oldest son did see 2 doe last Saturday evening but they were out of his shooting ability range. A guy I go to church with is a trophy hunter and owns his own land. My son is hunting with him the rest of the season so he can shoot a doe or small buck. I am grateful for him allowing him to hunt with him. Santa is bringing him a brand new Marlin XS7 .243 rifle. So I am sure he will spend some time in a tree with his new gun the last week of deer season.
We had a huge acorn crop this year making deer harder to locate. They can find acorns anywhere unlike in lighter acorn crop years.
Maybe next year will be a litle brighter and more productive.
I think I will start crappie fishing this Saturday if it don't rain or the wond isn't howling.
