hunting

I love that last picture of the bear. (but it's not my trailcam. ;) )

I know hogs are bad... but I'm jealous of you guys and gals that can hunt them in your area.

Bowhunting has been kind of slow here. The place I hunt was hit by EHD and the drought caused the oaks to abort most all the acorns so the remaining deer are not in the usual places.
I did have a 140" buck in front of me on opening day... but I'm on earn-a-buck property and didn't even see a doe for two weeks.

Here's that doe.

Have seen some small bucks lately, but that's about it. (other than turkeys, raccoons, coyotes and a bazillion squirrels... all of which are off limits where I hunt)

Hi fellow hunters :)

I love to hunt too. My husband is more into archery and I am more into rifle but now I have a crossbow so I go archery a few times a year (I can NOT pull back a compound....don't get me started).

So far this year, no luck. Archery ends in a few weeks and then rifle will start, yay! We have 8 tags between the two of us. We fill our tags every year and usually have a couple bagged already but so far, this year has sucked. LOL. I hope to fill all 8. We will probably eat one and the rest will be used to feed my dogs. I hope you don't think that's wasteful though. I am a raw feeder and having a few in the freezer helps A LOT with feeding them raw everyday. Its a great, all natural, grass fed meat.

Good luck to everyone who is going out!
Nothing wasteful about that as far I'm concerned. I feed any that looks like it's getting freezer burned to my outside dogs. And hey, there have been times I have PLENTY meat in the freezer but NO dough in my wallet.....dogs gotta eat, can't let them go hungry!! So I pull out some for them. Not like we won't get more the next season.

It also helps that we process our own. That way I can give the bones with good chunks of meat to the dogs while it's fresh. Heck, I don't waste ANY of the carcass. Believe it or not, you can take the liver (I have done it with deer, hog, and beef) and chop into chunks, boil, coool, then chop into very small pieces and feed to the chickens and quail. WONDERFUL protein. And they love it!!!

What is it with bears and cameras?
I know of 4 people who have had their game cams eaten by bear.
At least your camera got pics of the perpetrator.
this one has crunched a bunch of them, every one that has got a pic of him actually, they love them I guess. I see why Cudde back sells bear safes for the cameras now!!

You did not tell me you have bears down there i thought you have to only worry about hogs but bears too.

haha WE AINT SUPPOSED TO!! not here at least. about 90 miles or so to the east around the Okeefenokee Swamp, there's tons of them and they have seasons for them, but here I've never seen one or sign of one.
Was talking to the Game Warden yesterday about it ( he's a friend of one of club memebers) He said this year he knows of a lot of them in our general area that have been reported, no telling how many they havent been informed about. So looks like they are spreading now... just what I need.

Not being use to them, it sure makes it hard to walk into the thick slough bottoms here before day light haha

congratulations.. that is a really nice doe!

We have been hit with EHD in my area as well in S L Michigan. I'll be happy if I can fill my freezer but not expecting much. The area I hunt used to be great for bucks,

(sorry it's so small. This is the caliber of what we used to get ..14 pt. Double, double brow tines) It used to just be my dad and myself hunting.. now everyone and his brother are there and they shoot everything. I've tried getting them to consider some QDM, but they don't care.

Eventually you may get your wish in IL to hunt pig... we've got them starting to spread in MI... and there's only one way out! South! They're spreading slowly, the state was a tad slow to set parameters for shooting them. If anything I guess my CPL will be handy if I see a pig. Be careful what you wish for!

Here is my blacktail buck for the year. I recently moved to SE alaska and the wolves have really put a hurt on the deer population. I hiked over 100miles total over a month and a half and this was the only buck I saw. I wasn't about to let it get away. :)

Meat for the freezer.

Nice buck! I hunt public land here but it's 'controlled' so the number of hunters allowed is limited and we are all pretty much on the same page. Usually only 10 or less antlered bucks are taken off the property and most are 2.5 or 3.5. There are some bigger bucks around but they are almost unkillable. So, it's not a QDM property but it's not bad either. :) The earn-a-buck sure saves a lot of bucks too.

There are some wild hogs in some counties in IL. Farmers and hunters do shoot them on sight so hopefully they won't spread too much..... even if I would like to hunt them. I know what you're saying because I do a lot of bowfishing and bowfishers from other states tell me they're jealous of our asian carp populations... Those fish are terrible.. fun to shoot, not bad to eat... but otherwise awful for the ecosystem.
