Hurricane Irene

Good for you. I'm having the same philisophical debate with my DH right now. The chickens will prevail. Safety first!

I am so printing this off and running it out to the DH right now..we have had this debate ongoing for the last 2 days...we have a plan in place for all the "pets" if we need to leave in a hurry..when I asked him what about the chickens....I got the "What?" look...I have a plan in place..but he says I am on my own! Yeah right!

The storm hasn't started here yet... But my hubby has already given up. He knows the girls are coming in as soon as the storm starts. I only have the 8 outside (my 2 seramas already live in the house), so it won't be too bad. I'm NOT risking my babies.

It's been raining pretty hard and the wind gusts on occassion have shook the house. The coop is still standing strong - so maybe it would have handled it fine - but this is our 1st year with it - so better safe I say.

Here are my girls. Waiting for the storm in the basement. We brought them in already even though it's just a little rainy here on L.I. so far today. We didn't know how bad it would get by this afternoon so we did it this morning. Now I have piece of mind that they will be safe from falling trees. They have everything they need including their nest boxes, and someone already laid an egg! They crack me up!

I have some chairs down there so I will be going back down to spend time with them. It's weird looking out at their coop and not seeing them in the run. Good luck to all and be safe!

We are currently getting the wind and the rain it, but not as bad as it is suppose to be tonight. I had to stick the ducks in with the chickens as I don't trust their dog house enough not to blow away. Luckily it is a 10x12 coop with only two ducks and 10 chickens. I'm just hoping they don't go all crazy since I stuck the ducks, meat birds, and the layers all together. Put plenty of water and topped off the feeders. I'm hoping it all goes smoothly as this is the first year with the coop.

My husband is a sweetie! The chickens are basically pets with benefits so there was no question about them being out in the coop. Our coop is only 4 by 8 and he was concerned it would topple in the wind... The coop was rolled into the garage with the five 20 week olds and the older girls are hunkered down in the horse trailer complete with perch and next box. Of course we waited 10 minutes too long and spent 20 minutes in the pouring rain catching chickens that knew something was up... They have a 1/2 acre grassy paddock to range in and they did not want to be caught, even for BOSS...

The horses are snug in the stalls, the barn cats already in the loft and we're all ready to ride out the storm...

Ok what I did was put the chickens in the back of my pick up truck which has a cab . I made a roost for them:thumbsup out of a 2X4 put their water in and their food . I then put the truck into the garage . Now I know they will be ok in the storm.

We have a new coop this spring which is way sturdier then what we had in the past. (It's better constructed than our old house). I've got the girls set with some extra food and water and plan to go sit with them a bit tomorrow morning and feed them some extra treats. We haven't planned for them to come in the house, but we'll see what tomorrow brings! Hope the giant maple that is over the coop doesn't drop too many branches.

We are right on the coast and at the moment it is the calm before the storm. Not a breath of wind or a ripple on the water!

Sounds like everyone is well prepared. Stay safe and dry.

According to the latest the storm has been downgraded. By the time it reaches Long Island it should only be a tropical storm and should decrease rapidly after that. I suspect that from Connecticut on North it will be a rain event with not much wind.
