I will get pet carriers and pack up my birdies and take them to a friends garage up on the hill or to my dad's garage. We are at ground zero for an east coast storm. I let my chickens ride one out once, but they were up to their butts in mud for days. The new pen is in a lower lying area so they have to go somewhere. We get like 8 foot or more water in the yard during a direct hit. It really sucks. I tell people we live right on the Atlantic, but in a hurricane, we live IN the Atlantic Ocean.

Did you and your hubby discuss plan for your birds? I know how stressful military evac can be. Most of my family, including mom and dad, were career and my son is in navy now. See if my pm to you helps. You're welcome to come up and look at my place to see if it would put your mind at ease. Then if quick pull out is called for we can even meet you off 87. We have dealt with hurricanes, flooding, and evacuations and stay home now in any event. We're fairly self sufficent out here.

I am far enough up in the panhandle that we don't leave so I will be here with the chickens. Not really sure how to deal with them but that is one of my summer projects to start soon. I have open air pens.

I have to be honest. I've had chickens for 20 years, as well as many other pets. If it comes down to another hurricane, I will fill the feeders and waterers and leave the gates/doors open. I think they stand a better chance of survival. We won't be bugging out and will have our hands full as it is. We're on the coast of SC and are well overdue for another Hugo. DH and I have prepared as best we can and spent many hours going over plans and preparations.

But when it comes down to the nitty gritty, the order is humans, dogs, cats and then the chickens and ducks. Having some 30+ birds is the main reason, too many to squeeze in the bathroom.

If I DO have the time? I might just sacrifice the spare bedroom and hope it stays put!

I'd build my coop on a utility trailer. Build it with windows that open and close for ventilation, maybe shutters. A tin garbage can for feed storage inside or on tongue.

Then just hitch it up and drive off if needing to evacuate. On a 7' x 10' utility trailer, or even a 4' x 6', coop would be big enough to leave them in it while staying at SIL's.

Four 4' x 8' panels, separated, could be lashed on top or the sides of traveling coop, for a temporary pen on arrival to be setup.

I have been thinking about this. It was so sad in Japan they had to just leave all the animals and livestock and dairy herds to starve because of the radiation levels. Seems we have to be ready for anything.
