My pekin duck was ( and still is) limping. When I caught her to see what the matter was, I saw that the middle 'toe' on her left foot was swollen. I think she has an infection, but I am not sure. She could have broken her foot. I do not know how to tell the difference in a duck's foot, and how to treat either one. I have no idea of what to do, and I do not want to loose my duck....

She has also stopped grooming her feathers.

Here is a link to a little blurb on bumble foot. I've dealt with it a couple of times. The first time a vet trip and meds were required to fix it. But the last time I caught it early and I just made sure that I got all rough surfaces out of their pen and worked extra hard at keeping things clean and fresh and it went away on it's own.

There is one black spot on the bottom of her foot. I am pretty sure it is bumble foot now, but I still am not sure of how to treat it.

I thought there used to be pictures of treating this somewhere (but can't seem to find them now). When I took our first one to the vet, he used tweezers to pop the "plug" (the black spot) out of the swollen area and then he squeezed yellow infected stuff out of the opening (it was more the consistency of curdled milk than puss). He gave me antibiotics to give her twice a day - but he said that the antibiotics weren't necessary if the the infection hadn't gotten really bad. Then he suggested that I keep her in a smaller enclosure with clean straw (or other bedding) for a few days to keep the dirt and mud out of it while it started to heal. He wanted me to squeeze the infected area every day, but I never did get much more out than he did at the vet clinic.

That's my experience, don't know how much it helps. Hopefully there are others that might have suggestions as well, or can point you to more specific treatment options.

The other thing I did was to clear any debris that could cause injury out of the duck run and rake the area that they free range in. I had some left over broken up pieces of a cement patio that we removed and there were also a lot of brambles around their pen and exercise area so I cleared those out as much as possible. I think this helped prevent future problems.

Oh and then Nettie (one of the users here) makes lovely little duck booties, which people have used it sounds like with great success. Here is one of those threads with pictures of the wonderful little duck 'shoes'.

Bumblefoot is no laughing matter, but you can't help but smile pretty darn big at the sight of these booties.
