Just would like someone's opinion that has had a lot experience with hurt chickens. My rooster was attacked by dog and I'm new to caring for chickens. I've had him for year but still learning. He's got a big kinda deep gash on his hind back in front of his tail feathers. He's never let us touch until yesterday when we had to try to get some vetericyn spray I found at Rural King on him. He's doing ok but doesn't like us touching him. He's only bird we have no other chickens. Thought he'd be fine on his own but when I was just reading someone's posts. They put theirs in cage to keep flies away. Should I keep him in cage inside away from flies? Are flies big threat to him?

Not knowing where you live/climate makes it difficult to advise you. If you are in a warm/hot climate where flies are prevalent at this time of year, - you need to protect your roo from fly strike.

That is when flies lay eggs in the wound, which hatch out as maggots and a whole lot of trouble. When maggots run out of decaying flesh to munch on they go after living flesh. They can migrate through the body to organs and the brain and destroy the victim.

If you have flies out, yes they need to be kept from his wound, or he could get flystrike or maggot infestation. You may want to put some antibiotic ointment on the wound as well twice a day after cleaning with Vetericyn.

I was told by few people to keep it dry. Antibiotic ointment make it moist. Plus do I need to get special antibiotic ointment for chickens? Because that's 1st thing I thought I should put on it after I get it cleaned up.

Actually with wounds on chickens, you don’t want them to dry out before there is some healing. This would be especially important with a deep wound. The ointment can help to keep flies off as well. Human plain Neosporin or Triple Antibiotic Ointment, Polysporin, or similar ointment are fine.
