Husband is really going to kill me over my chicken math skills!!!

I started with just 6 told myself that's all I needed for eggs. Guess what 6 just doesn't do it I now have 100. Planes fly over and think I have a coop farm...

Oh about 10 years ago, DH looked at kids, looked at the chickens, looked at me, looked at the chickens, looked back at me

"Didn't we start with 3 chickens?"

"Yes dear, why?"

"How many do we have now?"

"Not sure"

"Did we start with ducks?"

"Nope."

"Why do we have them again?"

"They are cute."

"Ok"

Left it at that.

2 years later, he'd heard the term chicken math somewhere. Repeat the looking around at the flock, having now added guineas

"Dear, how many chickens do we have now?"

"More than last time you asked, why?"

"I think you've passed chicken math just fine. I think you are now taking chicken algebra."

"Um, ok dear?"

Now, before I am the one at fault for EVERYTHING...

Then 10 y/o DD goes "Dad, can we get peafowl?"

"What?"

"I want to have some peafowl, I think they are interesting."

"Why?"

"Dad, please??? Here is what they need, what they act like, etc..." as she handed DH a pack she'd printed.

"What did Mom say?"

"To ask you."

DH flipped thru papers "Well, I guess 1 male and 2 females would be ok, but we have to build them a barn and pen first."

Yes, I did tell her to ask DH, as I figured he'd say no.

I think we are aiming for our doctorates in chicken math.

We started with 11 and needless to say a year later I think we have over 100, not sure though I have lost count. But I do know that you must just give in to your addiction lol. I just bought 16 EE's, 6 SS, 4 BR and 1 BO, Plus 11 Muscovy ducks.....Oh yeah ducks are a whole nother ball game...Just as addctive as chickens. I just cant help myself anymore. DH has just given in and when I need more room he just says "yes dear".

Ok, How catching is this chicken math stuff? I'm a newbie & I have 4 almost 4 wks old BO pullets. I have have been reading, learning & researching everything I can on chickens to give them a good home. Problem is these are not even grown and I want a couple of other breeds. I'm guessing this is chicken math. Have not tried to explain to hubby about chicken math yet. Think I will wait until these 4 are out in their new coop then hit him with chicken math and the need for another coop and run for more. Does this sound about right? By the way, Tigerlily how do you get a half of a goat?

Yes he is. Can't say I wanted/needed 13 more chicks and 13 ducklings, but what can I say. I knew better than to let him go on his own to the store with only his baby girls. By now he knows I'm not really going to mind more birds.

Sad part? DH is the master coop builder here. I say a nice 10 x 10 coop for the banties. He builds them this 16' x 24' banty heaven coop. We've had this discussion before. If he builds to the size I vote for, we don't have room for more. If he builds to his size, we have a coop with room for twice as many.

Currently I have 26 hens (just starting to lay), 4 pair of oegb, frizzle cochins (rooster and 4 hens), 5 BCM's (rooster and 4 hens), pair of japanese bantams, pair of geese, pair of muscovy ducks, 1 cayuga drake, 17 EE chicks (pullets), 25 Cuckoo maran chicks (only keeping 5, been trying to sell the other 20 for a week now with no luck so its beginning to look like im stuck with all of them), 1 bob white quail who is spoiled rotten, about a dozen free ranging mutt chickens, and last but not least a emu chick.

You know, my chicken math has been off before. At one time, several years ago I had over 200 birds growing, costing over $200 per month in feed. After several years of having no birds I decided to raise chickens again this year. Built my coop and bought some eggs on Ebay. Out of 40+ eggs, only 12 hatched in my homemade incubator. Did not have enough to crank up the Sportsman Cabinet 1202A. Then my chicken math kicked in and I needed more. The first batch we raised in the house for 5 weeks and then I put them in the coop. They are doing great. I then purchased eggs locally off Craig's list, approximately 15 dozzen. Put them in the Sportsman and yesterday I had about 130 or so hatch. We lost count taking them out of the unit. These little angels are in two brooders in our living room doing great. I had to help 10 out of their eggs, which would otherwise be dead. I plan on giving some to a member at church that lost their chickens over the winter.

Later this month I will be getting Guinea, Turkey and Jungle Fowl eggs, and will crank up the Sportsman again. I love these little birds.

May God bless you all...
