Husband is really going to kill me over my chicken math skills!!!

LOL. We were only going to get 6 Buff Orpington chicks this year. As of this morning, we have 47 chicks in our brooder, with a handful more arriving in May.

I am no help. I am the same way. I cannot even go into the feed store alone. I cannot be trusted.

We wanted 4 chickens. After many math issues, we are up to 10 (after giving some away already). We have one suspect roo, that may go, but either way it is 9 or 10! We have only been doing this a few months too!

We are new to chickens this year. I wanted 8. DH vetoed, said 5. I came back with 7. He said UP TO 5. He didn't want a whole yard full of chickens. But what if some are roos? What if a couple die? I am after all brand new to this, and some do die, or get eaten...and we want 5 ADULT chickens, right? Went to store. Picked out 6 of different breeds. Came back Monday b/c I needed an easter egger. Saw the silver seabright and neeeeeeeded one of those too. Got my 8 chickens. Hoping they are all hens!

I think I'll tell him to build the coop a little big, just in case...

We were only going to start out with 12 pullets for eggs. Just for us. But then the minimum order was 25 so I was going to get 10 of 2 breeds and 5 of another. Well before I placed my order I thought that I needed 10 of all three breeds. Well 2 died about a week after they arrived. Then I had to go to the store and get some feed and a bigger feeder and came home with 2 ducks and 2 replacements for the 2 that died. Also had 5 other bantams and pullets come home with me. After that we went to another store looking for some more ducks for my wife and we came home with 3 more bantams and 7 more pullets. I also just hatched 12 more chicks. Then my wife went to the store last night to get more feed and came home with 6 more. I don't even have the coop built yet.

I think this math is just crazy....

I got 1 buff hoping for a brooder (along with 5 other chicks), but it seems that I got a roo instead. Hubby told me to go to the store and get some more so that we are sure that one is a pullet. Got to love his math. I asked if we are getting too many (we live in town) and he said not to worry that they all taste like chicken and he likes BBQ chicken, baked chicken, fried chicken, etc. He walked away laughing and saying all the kinds of chicken dishes he could think of. I guess the look on my face was priceless. We do intend to eat our birds but for him to put it just that way, made me laugh too.

Oh wow, so glad I'm not the only one! We decided we want 4-6 laying hens. I've been at this less than three weeks and now have 8 in the brooder plus 12 or so more coming next week. My husband says he's just relieved our coop can only hold 20 so I'm now at my limit.

I had to reduce one of my orders so I could get a few more of other breeds. They are so addictive. I absolutely love my little chicks. Worst part is, my husband is mostly okay with it because we plan to put the roosters in the freezer (though we may keep one). BUT the problem with that is that many of the ones I have or are getting are already sexed as pullets. We may end up having to sell some late summer, but at least we'll have some choice in the ones we keep.

DH: Okay, which eggs am I not supposed to eat?

Me: The ones sitting out on the counter.

DH: But there's like 20 of them. I can't eat any of these eggs?

Me: No, eat the ones in the fridge.

DH: Why can't I eat them?

Me: They're going in the incubator.

DH: Oh my god.

Me: They're for DD's science fair project. We have to be sure she gets at least a few to hatch.

DH: I am really starting to worry about you.

hey it aint only girls here haha my gf wants to kill me aswell cuz of the "time" im putting into setting up the chicken coop and run, she says in gonna sprout feathers and walk around going book book book lmao

No significant other here. There IS a landlord that wants me to reduce my flock, though... But those chickens just move around too fast for me to count them. And some of them are bantams, anyway. Plus, none of the chicks count. And certainly NONE of the eggs - you can't count your chickens before they hatch!

Well

ShortCircuitRanch2332 My new twist is "we need a heavier breed if you want the for the freezer ... how about BO's" then I give him my breed book marked if a few places and walaaaa we're getting BO's on Saturday.
