Husky Reds

Update on the Husky Red Broilers. After a couple of mystery deaths, some predator deaths and a playful puppy death, we processed twenty five Husky Reds at sixteen weeks old. They put 111.66 pounds in the freezer at a 4.46 pounds average. They were very active foragers and strong well muscled birds. They have nice yellow skin and a lot of dark yellow fat, the meat has good flavor and nice firm texture. They would leave s full feeder to go out to the pasture to eat bugs, seeds and grass. The growth rate is nowhere close to the Cornish X but I'm more interested in high quality healthy meat and insect control. We're planning a side by side comparison between the Husky Reds and the Cornish X in the near future. We plan to brine one of each together and cook them side by side, then do the taste test. I will update with the results.

Purchased 50 husky reds from hoovers, all arrived in good condition. free ranged them with electric poultry net fence. Fed blue seal 22% entire time of 15 weeks except in the beginning 3 weeks on 28% turkey starter. Amazed how rugged and healthy these birds are. Ended up with 48 birds, dressed 15 were over 7 pounds, 32 were over 6 pounds, and not one was under 5 pounds. I spent more on quality protein than most but the results were well worth it. next year I am going to raise 100 so I can fill my 2 sons freezers.

We had one mixed in with the americana chicks we bought. HOLY crap, she's HUGE. From the get go we thought she was a boy. Her feet were enormous. Then by week 4 she was more than twice the size of our other chicks. Now at 14 weeks old, she is BIGGER than my 3 year old french copper marans ROOSTER!

Prince Charming is now called Mirida. LOL.

I couldnt get a shot of her and the rooster in the same frame. She, being young, keeps her distance from him. But here she is next to my 3 year old fully feathered blue laced red wyandotte, and you KNOW how big they are! I hope that helps. I'll keep her as a layer.
