My hen has hyperkeratosis (diagnosed by vet) on her foot. 3 weeks ago it was operated on to remove as much of the growth as possible. My hen couldn't walk before or after the operation. It didn't improve her mobility at all unfortunately. But it is coming back and hope someone can advise what I can do to help her. I soak her foot and apply an antiseptic spray daily. No improvement at all.

Hi @Chadhen :frow Welcome To BYC!

Can you post some photos of the foot? Photos of what it used to look like before surgery too if you have them.

Hi there welcome to BYC! :frow

How old is your hen? Can you post pics? Is your vet an avian vet? Are you sure it isn't scaly leg mites, which leave behind keratin sticking out from under the scales? Do you have other chickens who are not effected?

You might see if she is comfortable in a sling...

Hi She was originally being treated for scaly leg mite as that's what I thought it was at first. She is my last hen now but have never seen anything like this in my hens before. Sling looks good although she just stands on one leg on sits down.

What I would try. I'm no vet, but this works wonders for most necrotic sores that isn't venting out. 50/50 castor oil and coconut butter. (I put a couple drops of tea tree oil in for good measure) Coco butter will kill just about any fungus or bacteria, promotes healing, and will smoother mites. The castor oil will promote blood flow and help it begin to heal. If it starts bleeding, back off the castor oil. Be careful around pregnant ladies with the castor oil, and wear gloves or it can give you the trotts, (it would take a lot through the skin) Also, I throw a cinnamon stick, 1/4 teaspoon turmeric, 3 crushed cardamom pods in about 3 gallons when I water, really good natural antibiotic properties, our birds, (chickens, ducks, geese, and turkeys), prefer it to plain water. Seems to keep my turkeys in tip top, the water doesn't sour, and I don't know of any adverse effects. Good luck!
