Hypothermic hen

well, she was alive for a little while, but i am sure she is gone now.

Bummer. I got her and her 2 sisters on easter of this year. They grew up and i took good care of them since they were chicks.

Just recently they have been laying eggs. So i was quite proud of of having them.

This has thought me one thing.... i can never eat my own chickens. I felt so sorry for them that using them for meat is now out of the question.

I will forever have chickens, because they are a delight to keep, and eggs are delicious!

Worse part is, this hen didnt even have a name.

I am so sorry. We lost a hen a week or so ago and my heart still aches for her. Hope you find peace quickly. :aww Suz

Sorry for your loss Ravenboy,

I have a golden sebright who at about 2 months old jumped into a 5 gallon bucket of water.
When DH found it, it was so cold and not moving much.
I blow dried it and wrapped it in a bath cloth and then pulled a blanket around it. After about 30 minutes, he started singing.
I really wish your result could have been like mine.

I hope my other two chickens will carry on without her. I am hoping they dont notice. Do chickens get struck with grief?

If anything i hope this thread will help someone else. Tommarow i am moving the coop to a fenced off area where they cant get to the pool anymore. So this will never happen again.

Chickens certainly do notice when one goes missing. They do carry on, but you can tell that they know. I imagine you will see this tomorrow morning. It is more pronounced when the chicken that died hung out with one other chicken. The remaining chicken often wanders around looking for their friend.

The other may notice that their buddy's missing...depending on the bird, they may get over it quickly or it might take a while...

So very sad...I'm sorry....poor girl.

Hopefully the knowledge of what happened to your hen will help others avoid leaving buckets of water around, or access to pools or any other lurking dangers.

And yes, chickens do grieve. Hopefully the 2 that remain will get consolation from one another and from extra TLC from you.
