HYPP in horses

Quote:
As I understand it, even the seemingly asymptomatic HYPP horses experience tiny muscle contractions all the time. This constant stimulation causes the muscles to develop, sometimes to an outrageous degree. QH halter horses are supposed to have big muscles, so you can see why the halter people would gravitate toward them.

They are just trying to throw a sop to the whiners so the bad publicity will die down and they can go back to business as usual. It's just windowdressing, pure and simple. (patnchick)

Not being willing to weed out N/H proves your statement.

That way, two N/H animals can always breed and produce a severe (H/H) offspring; it will stay in the gene pool indefinitely.

I know there are genetic defects in other horse breeds, but generally, most horse breeders seem to be incredibly eager to squash them out, and other organizations seem to be very eager to prove how much they're doing. I think not doing so is short sighted. The breed is much more respectable, sellable and marketable, if things like that are completely and rigorously culled.

I do hear rather a few people saying something completely new: "I would never get a Quarter Horse because of the way the AQHA is handling hypp". I think the AQHA thinks they just have so many horses in their registry, are so big and have such a successful advertising campaign, that they don't need to handle this rigorously.
