I’m back, new eggs on the way!!!

If you can find one, a 40 gallon breeder tank will give you the most floorspace for your buck :)

Get one of those metal reptile screen tops and you'll be set!

Yes i have Three in total lol theyre my favorite! I bet the "display" 55 i had had just about the same bottom sq footage as the 40 breeders do. But then i think a 55 would better fit Cosmosue's needs in her office...

Well just something the size of a large tub to replace it when I get a chance, I do use a screen cover already - we cut the middle out of the cover you buy with the tubs and cover it in screen. I was just thinking it might be nicer to see through the brooder and if I get a Tank yeah I would get the cover ;) lol

But yeah I have a small home office and the incubators and brooder are inside that and also that is where my son uses his laptop for homeschool. It’s a communal office but mostly MINE lol

So you genetics minded folk think you might be able to help me w blue quail egg gene questions? I have a number of eggs that are not blue on the outside, but like an AM egg, the inner shell is def blue in candling. Id like to know if i bred them i might be able to bring iut the illusive blue egg gene

ETA i messaged Robby at JMF to ask if his birds carried the blue egg gene and am awaiting response. Response is that he does sell them, he is the person who first imported them in 2014, but i did not buy a celadon line.

There are a few hatcheries that sell celadon. I think KC farms, Old world quail, and Myshire do too. I don't think the blue inner lining is related to the outside shell color expression but I could be totally wrong; you probably emailed the person who would know best, I'd be interested to hear what he says.

I didnt wanna bug him with the "if" questions, i only texted n asked the one question, if they carry the gene and he said no :hitbut he gave me alot more info just because hes great at sharing his knowledge!

Specifically he said:

"We do sell Celadon eggs - I'm the person who imported celadon into the USA in 2014 - my breeder lines are very established and doing great - the line you purchased would not carry the gene - that line may hatch a odd plumage color but very low percentage ( maybe 2or 3 per 200-300 eggs ) I do sell celadon eggs - .80 cents each shipped or .50 cents each picked up"

Its very tempting :oops:but i didnt mention that just thanked him. I want All the Buuuurdsssss!:drool but i have 100 in the incubator:oops:

I have talked to Old world quail actually Just this week so it’s funny you mentioned it! And I was also asking about the blue eggs and what usually hatched out of them, I have read it’s mostly a brown, red, autumn, hued bird but I have also read you can get silvers and others it depends who the parents are for that obviously but that isn’t what you were asking... soooo

From what I have gathered online - and remember to take this with a grain of salt I have not plunged fully into it yet - but I read that just about any quail can randomly carry this gene and lay blue eggs?? I am NOT sure on this so feel free to correct me here but I heard any color bird can carry the gene and IF you have a bird that lays these pretty celadon eggs that bird lays them for life.

In order to get hens that lay the elusive blue eggs your best bet is to buy some (yeah as mentioned not cheap right now) and then hatch them and you will know if you got lucky when the hens from the batch start to lay. I read it’s 30-40% chance any hens hatching from the blue eggs will actually be a blue egg layer.

But the good news is all of those hens and roosters will carry the blue egg gene. So you would then mate them and try again. If you mate a hen from a blue egg to a rooster from a regular hen you will get normal eggs (so I have read)

So my guess is you buy the blue eggs, hatch blue eggs, Hope for some girls and at least 1-2 males and then when they are old enough they either lay blue for ya or they mate and you incubate those eggs and see if that batch that hatched has any females that lay blue eggs. Rinse repeat until you are satisfied with the amount of blue egg layers you have.

But I think I read somewhere that like I said any quail could be hiding this gene and you would never know unless you got super lucky and bred your stock and happened to get a hen that laid the blue eggs then you would know the gene is hidden in your flock and that the rooster you used was definitely carrying it...

Shrug... that’s what I know

I thought the mutation could show up very rarely in any bird but you wouldn’t know it unless you bred for it blue gene roo to blue gene hen. *shrug* I dunno lol

Lol you crack me up! Ok so the dimensions of a 55g are like what 48 inches long? It fits along the wall here in the pic. That wall where the big tapestry is, that is where my brooder goes and there is a plug behind it where the humidifier is currently. I had a large rabbit hutch in there last year but it’s been moved outside. Then I have the small glass table to the left with the Hovabator on top of it, and a book to keep it from rattling lol oh and a box with my small incubator because I think imma get a small mixed batch soonish in different colors and put them in that.

What is this “40 breeder” thing I am confused? Is this just another fish tank or is this something specifically for quails? I think I got lost somewhere LOL not unusual for me...
CoturnixComplex has a good point with the cost of the 40 breeder but i could just see it 55 long against your (imagined) wall :lau next to the desk making for havoc in the work place :D

Purely an exercise of imagination

Here is the part of the office the babies go, Opposite is the window and my corner desk with my beast of a machine because - graphic design - you gotta have a beast lol
