Hi, I’m new here! Just getting started and really needing information from experienced chicken people. I’m in south Alabama, with hot and humid summers, and looking for advice about breeds that would do well. My goals are eggs and possibly meat so I’m focusing on dual purpose chickens. I would love advice about a dual purpose breed (that is heat tolerant) of rooster that I can pair with a few hens of the same breed although I’m planning a mixed flock as well. Thank you all in advance and looking forward to learning from everyone.
We're glad you joined. We're in SE MO, and it's hot and humid here too. We've experimented with a couple of different breeds and been pretty happy with all of them - EE, Dominiques and Black Australorps. But lately we've just been ordering CornishX or Cornish Game Hens because they're harvest ready in five to eight weeks, and raise them separately from the layers. You get so much more meat per bird, too.
