I’m not Mother Nature, but..... My journey hatching broody and bator chicks

Pics
They can zip and pop fast!!

I wanted to make sure I knew which chick came out of the few eggs I knew which pullet layed. Nothing more than learning and being able to spot the different ????
Well, if you don't mark them(band) you may forget pretty quick, unless you take good pics when they dry in the divider...even then. But it's fine, good test for your dividers for the future.

First to hatch - Egg #10
Dark down
Single comb
Clean legs
Slate/black legs
Possible white spot on head

I thought this egg was from my Partridge Cochin, but w/o feathered legs I guess not. So the crap shoot goes on.

Question: I’ve read to open both plugs once they start hatching to expedite drying, but I’m afraid doing so will lower the RH. Right now the gauges read 68/82%.

I suspect the wall/mesh openings won’t hold the rambunctious chicks back. This one is trying its best and has almost made it through several times. I shall name him “Bull.” This chick has a bad case of “bed head” :gig and I can see the little uropygial gland.

Yeah, I guess I’ll just take good pics as they dry. I don’t have any bands to use and the tiny zip ties I have are all clear. I guess I could get some Crayola markers and color the bands, but I suspect that would be more trouble than it’s worth. LAL - my new acronym - Live And Learn, huh? Even at my age!

But I love all this! :love

Good deal. I am going to set them correctly right now. Thank you very much. I appreciate all the help while I’m learning. I would much rather imprint my mind correctly from the beginning. Then there’s no wondering, or him-hawing as I like to call it, later on as to what is right.

P.S. What does CAM stand for?

Yeah! A hatcher! :ya

CAM = chorioallantoic membrane. It’s the blood vessel network that should develop throughout the whole egg. Turning causes it to disperse properly.
When development starts, it’s small, and localized. Turning promotes the dispersion thru the whole egg.
I took this pic half way thru a turn as I rolled the egg. You can see how it’s only on one side, which was the top before I started the roll. It gravitates back to the top on its own and gains more ground each time we turn them.

So cuuuuuute!

Remove those plugs! (Trash them!) Don’t worry about the gages now, just keep the same amount of water you have, and all should be fine. The numbers will fluctuate, but ignore them. The eggs/chicks need the oxygen and ventilation. The water may evaporate more quickly, so keep it up, but don’t fret over a number now. You know the chicks are hatching, so job well done!

Plugs are OUT!

Thank you for the definition of CAM. That is just another amazing part of the hatching process that awes me.

Oh Lawd! “Bull” has encroached into Buckeye territory. What am I gonna do? :lau @aart

First time I hatched 2 different breeds in my Brinsea Octagon, I built a “wall” from the foam pads that come with the turner rails (about 10” long, 1/2” square) wrapped some sewing thread around a stack of them. Looked perfect to me!
They still climbed over it!!

They are strong, but then again if they weren’t they would NEVER get out of that shell.
