I <3 Modern Game Bantams

My first modern laid about 4-5 eggs a week. We didn't have a rooster then. I don't know when my new little girl is gonna lay...

No diapers... they are not allowed to run around. They must stay on the ladder so they can poop on newspaper under them. If they would wear diapers, I would let them run around. It would be so fun to let them peck around the house.

What colors do you have? They are all so pretty! I used to think moderns were just freaky looking - my husband HAD to have them though - we call them "minions" now! They really grow on you, and they chatter so much! They let you know what they think! Now they seem almost graceful and elegant. Weird how it goes from Freaky to Elegant when they get a personality?

Awesome birds, and not very typical chicken like, really. Almost like their own kind of bird, except my showgirl hangs out with them and she gets along with them fine? Then again, she's not a very typical chicken either? I say our Moderns own us...when we have overnight company now, we have them stay outside in our Travel trailer, with the disclaimer that it's quieter outside in the trailer, than in our house with three roosters crowing! No arguments so far!

One of my students found one on the side of the road and gave it to me... I did not want another chicken, much less an ugly one but as I started to get to know her, I fell in love and I will always have them as part of my flock. They are not ugly to me anymore... they have the BEST personalities. Always following us around the yard, walk right into the house and jump up on me when I let them.

I have 2 brown reds. I'd like some buff colored ones but I have to ease my husband into that... lol.

My little roo just started crowing in the morning... good thing i am up already when he starts his thing...

Oh, and about diapers, yes, Tubby, my Old English Rooster wears a diaper, and Muriel, one of the Moderns, wears one when she wants to run around sometimes. Mostly they like to stay in the cage. I am making more diapers, but Tubby got too naughty to just let them run loose, even with a diaper. It was the last straw when I found out my husband was teaching him to drink out of the open tea pot. And he learned quick, but did it once when the tea pot was hot! Almost melted his comb when he stuck his head in the pot...so I only let him out supervised at all times, and he HAS to stay off the counter, which he WONT do...he flies all over. So cage time for Tubby! Even I have my limits...Chickens on the counters...that's it, it's over.

Moderns are not the best of layers and usually don't get going till spring. Lights will help them lay and pullets will lay first and then hens will start.

FYI- those that hatch for showing don't start hatching till late March or April. This has basicly been done for 100+ years, which may account for them to lay late in spring.

Probably not... these bantams are very seasonal with their laying. It was very hard for me to find 2 young chicks in October. And the youngest I could find were 4 weeks old. I made A LOT of phone calls and sent A LOT of emails to breeders looking for chicks and most people had pullets that were around 6 months.

You are probably going to have to wait...

I have the email address of the breeder I got mine from and I just met someone locally who breeds them too. I can give you info if you want. But I really doubt anyone is laying right now.
