I allways figgerd that birds as species were fragile animals..........

He's not an EE Anne. He is a pure bread Araucana. He is from an original blood line that a friend of mine has had for 30 years.

I have to agree with Anne that this is not an Araucana..it is an EE. An araucana does not have muffs or the various plumage patterns that this bird does. Araucana are not mean, in general or in my experience (altho there are sometimes exceptions as with all breeds). I have numerous araucana roosters as well and have yet to experience a single sign of aggression from any of them.

I have also raised EEs and know that their temperaments vary greatly, depending on what is bred into them. I recently rehomed an entire flock and had to choose a place where my rooster would be the only male that lived there. He does not tolerate any other male species. The rooster was great with people, but not other animals. I also had a red rooster, similar in appearance to yours that was very nasty. He attacked everyone without a second thought.

Good luck with your roo. I would definitely keep him confined with children around until he learns his manners. If he doesn't outgrow it, he should be put down IMO.

Oh... sorry. I thought it looked like he had a small beard & muffs, but looking at the pic again I realize I could be wrong. That plus tail & non-standard color made me assume EE.

I got my original birds from Pat in Florida -- they were more docile/non-aggressive than any other breed I've raised.

I'm sure some Araucanas are aggressive... I've just been fortunate enough not to have that experience with mine. I'm sorry your roo is being a meanie -- chickens are certainly not as "chicken" as they're cracked up to be, are they!

i would have killed him... Now if i had a Bird. and he attacked me (i have no problem with it). those i try to Tame.. if i cant tame them i sell them. Now.. when one of my chickens attack a Visitor.. Depending on the age is what i decide to do. adult. they can kill it. or i'll just try to tame him. Teenager (my age).. pretty much the same. but when it comes to little kids When i see something like that my thoughts "Kill it.." anyone/Anything attacking kids is just kind of my "pet-peeve"

I absolutely agree with you Daniel.Believe me when i say that i had no other intentions BUT to kill him when i saw him about to pounce on my grandson. I am still thoroughly amazed that my kick didn't at least incapacitate him. After the kick my attention turned immediately to Hayden and when i saw he was untouched my addrenalin had by them calmed down enough to take away the energy i needed to go after him and kill him. Gittin old i guess lol
I am going to give this fella ONE chance to outgrow this behaviour. Fortunately tho he won't have to be killed. He can go back to my friend that i got him from for breeding stock. On that farm there is no chance of Gen.T'so comin in contact with youngins. And there are plenty bigger older badder birds there to give him whatfor .

No worries Anne, i'm sure that you have been at this a lot longer than i have. And, i am jist goin by what i was told be my friend. After readin yer response i went to the Araucana society website and did some comaprrisons and there is a chanace that you are correct. I found a couple small inconsistancies in Gen. T'so compared to the info on thier site. I am gonna bring this up with my friend and se what he has to say. I don't want to be guilty of tryin to pass off an imposter lol
Serioulsy tho, when it comes to animals i am a purist. I raise Rotties and when i see a mix or rottie mutt or one o' them "english" rotties it 'bout sends me into a tizzie. I am sure the Araucana folks feel the same 'bout Ameraucanas and EE's

Hey Jim,

Giving your roo ONE more chance sounds more than fair to me!

Regarding Araucanas/Ameraucanas/Easter Eggers, I try not to let myself get too uptight about it!

The fact that your friend has been raising blue-egg-layers for 30+ years (wow!) means he has been raising them since Araucanas had just recently been standardized -- that is, when he started with his birds, "Easter Egger" and "Araucana" may still have been pretty much synonymous! He may not realize that the Standard of Perfection now has extremely specific qualifications for both Araucanas and Ameraucanas, and that birds that don't meet either description are now deemed "Easter Eggers." So don't be too hard on him!

hey - we have a bird named General Tso too - tho she is a girl. She's a silver spangled hamburg.

We once thought of naming them ALL after possible dishes, but my daughter rebelled.

How long are you willing to hang onto your three silver pheasants? Also is it a male & two females or three females? I have family NE of Pittsburgh (Kittaning), but we won't make it there until Thanksgiving (dang gas prices). Hubby lost his buddy last fall and really wants some more.

I am Anne,i really like him and he's only 4 month sof age. Allthough, my buddy swears that he'll most likely get meaner.
I asked him about what you say and he told me that GT is most likely a Araucana x Amaraucana.
He has allready offered to swap me GT for another roo that is a bit older and very docile. I'm gonna give GT another chance tho.
