I am a kid trying to convice his parents to have chickens! Please help!

With just 4 hens you would not have many eggs to sell anyway. I presume you will have to invest in an incubator then so that adds some costs.

The 10:1 ratio is not set in stone. During breeding season I usually have 2-3 hens per male.

Yes, I did include the cost of an incubator. I put it into my little sheet of costs. So 4:1 would be okay year-round? I am looking at Buff Orpingtons.

You'll have to watch the hens to make sure the roo isn't too rough. If they have feathers missing from their backs, you may need to separate him for a while. There are 'saddles' that you can put on their backs to help protect them. a smaller amount of hens per roo, is duable just more work and awareness, as well as more stressful on All the chickens. The still air incubators are always for sale second hand. You might be able to get lower prices if you state that your a youth who is experiencing raising chickens. or something like that. Orpingtons are great, we have currently 21 of them, 11 growing(some being rehomed or eaten) and 10 layers just given to us. I love holding them and enjoying their personalities.

I love chickens!!!! I am trying to convince my mom to get more chickens. I love my 4 chickens are very lovely and that's why I want more chickens, but my mom says "We have a fine amount of chickens." How can I convince her to get more?

You could find that WW2 poster with uncle sam telling people to raise chickens. On it, it stated that 2 chickens per person is enough to keep the household full of eggs. If you are all egg eaters maybe she'll bite. lol :D

I have 4 chickens and 7 people in my family. And we like eggs , but my mom still says no to more chickens.

Well, my dad is very "Does it have a good ROI"?

So selling eggs does not. Rather selling chicks does. I have thought it through (the selling side). But this 10:1 ratio is a big hiccup here.
I wouldnt say selling eggs does not give you a good money turn out, we use to make almost $200 a week in egg sale when we had our 50 hens about a year and a half ago. Now i have 50 baby girls again and just waiting for them to get laying age. But with you since you are only getting a handful of chickens you wouldnt make much but you will save on buying eggs at the store.

I know a person locally who has 20 Rhode Island Red hens. He is selling a dozen for $2, and still no one is buying.

Where you live will determine how much money you make off of selling eggs.Ask the person you know if he advertises his egg business. He may just need to get word out there. And you think you will make more money off of selling chicks. Are there many people in your area who would like to raise chickens? Again, ask around before you breed and see if you can find people that would be interested in buying chicks from you. Otherwise, you may end up with more chickens than you know what to do with.
