I am a new member! Is this the right intro page?

Hi! My name is Emily (Emi) McMail, and I stumbled across this site a year ago and just now made a profile. I just have too many questions and comments (and birds!!!) to watch from the sidelines anymore, LOL.

Let's see, I grew up riding horses, and 3-Day Eventing was my passion for a long time, but something about the bird-raising part of farm life always felt like the thing that was missing from mine.

When I experienced multi-organ failure in May 2017 and wasn't expected to make it, after months of re-learning how to function, after surviving a coma and after many unpleasant procedures, I decided life is too short to give up my dream of owning chickens. At least, it started out that way.

I now have 31 chickens, 35 ducks, 4 guinea hens, 2 Toulouse geese, and a turkey. Making decisions was never my strong suit.

So, here I am, alive and delighted to find so many others who share a passion for all things farm bird-related! They say you can't win 'em all, but I feel truly blessed to have so many feathered friends that enrich my life and teach me lessons in patience every day!

I would be interested to find out how y'all got your start!
Hey, Emi, and welcome to the BYC clan. If you've been on the sidelines for a year, you already know, most likely, how many different directions you can go from where you are now.

How did I get started? Son & DIL drug a bunch of chicks home from the carnival one year, built a pen for them, then went back to WI, leaving the chicks here for me to care for.

That was 25 years ago, more or less. Since then, I've been in & out of chickens a few times; I guess I'm in for the long haul this time.

G'day and Welcome, Emi...how we started, was my partner saw Silkie chickens for sale and we went and bought two - one turned out to be a rooster and our city doesn't allow for them - he was re-homed back with his breeder - she thought he was a magnificent Roo, probably 'cause he was rather dotted on, lol...are other Silkie was a hen and not long after the re-homing, she was taken by a fox...now we are waiting to obtain some more Silkie chickens - not in any hurry, though.

Welcome to BYC!

Here is my best advice for navigating this forum:

Almost everyone here is an absolute expert on almost everything imaginable, take me for example I just left advice about freezing temps and I live in Southern California. So take the best and leave the rest.

Once you do get some good advice, and you will then follow said advice... Example being the guy who burned down his coop after being advised not to use a heat lamp in the coop and then talks about how to place the heat lamp going forward in the new coop....

Stay away from religion and politics, its just not worth it:oops:

Oh, and build BIG, chicken math is real:plbb

Welcome to the flock!

Gary from Idyllwild Ca here

G’Day from down under Emi :frow Welcome!

I cheated! :p This is an excerpt from My Chicken Page, a link to which is in my signature .......... The property came complete with an empty chicken coop and run. Thinking “we can’t leave that empty”; we fixed it up a little and went out in search of new residents.

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

If you would like to share pictures and stories of your flock, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out ;)

Yes, you've found the right page! Welcome :yesss:
I had been a lurker ever since I started chickeneering and then decided (I was just about to say earlier this year, gah!) just last year I would make an account.
I can tell you honestly that this silly little website has changed my life. Not much, but enough to notice! :D
I hope you enjoy it too. Best wishes.
