I had received some special chickens from my granddaughter.Tend to be exact. I have been learning this backyard, chicken stuff the hard way.I'm lucky that a few people have shared some very good tips.
I took some pictures to do a search on google, to find out exactly what kind of babies I have, and it has led me to your webpage.
I live in Houston, Texas, and I've recently retired a few years ago. For medical reasons. I wanted the backyard chickens for clean protein eggs. It really is a lot of work, but I find it enjoyable and rewarding for all of the knowledge that I am getting.
Anyway, I would like to share a few of my pictures. I ended up with seven roosters, and that became a nightmare for my three little hens. So we are down to 1 rooster, i named him friszle because he is like one of those little fireworks called a frizzle, that just shoots across the ground, really fast, small and frizzy, he is so funny always needing assistance to get up on the roost with the other chickens. And I was constantly having to get him out of trouble with the other roosters and chickens. As the other roosters got bigger
And I realizing, I could not have that many rooster I dwindle them dow to him. My granddaughter decided she wanted to buy an incubator and hatch some eggs, so I gave her 12.eggs. then I got nine juvenile chickens when she saw how much work it was. I gave her twelve more eggs, and she has hatched ten more babies. Pretty soon I will be needing to get rid of my silky male, because I don't want him breeding with his babies. But in the meantime, I will love to learn more about silkies.

Hiya, and welcome to BYC! :frow

I raise silkies. I'll just put it all in a message to you, but will say to make sure they have a secure coop and run if you make one of those as they can't fly, can't see half the time, and can't run for squat. Predators will have no challenge to get one.

You are in good company with many other Silkie fans on this site! It is lovely you and your granddaughter are hatching out chicks together (of course that means more roosters,) but hopefully a good lesson in responsibility and maintaining a flock as well. Welcome to BackYard Chickens!
