I stopped reading after the first two pages but I just wanted to say, try not to be too hard on yourself, and don't stop the bedtime count!

One night I was just so exhausted I was DONE with doing anything, so when I shut my chicken coop up I was lazy and didn't count. In the morning one hen was gone. I really kicked myself in the butt. The ONE TIME I didn't count and that was the night I was missing a hen. My favorite hen. My story has a happy ending though. Turns out she had a stash of TWENTY eggs hiding in the woods and that was the day she decided to hatch them. Poor thing. They were not fertile and the second I took them from her she decided she wasn't interested and went back to bed like the good hen she is.

Thank you very much for your kind words! - I assume exactly the same has happened here: I had to work the whole day without break here multiple times and locked up the Duckies way too late in the evening when it was already dark, after 10pm or even later. That was the opportunity for a predator to attack.
